Article: Half-Life 2 Story Speculation - Part 2
Author: Bite Feedback: Comments/Discussion
Date Added: November 2nd, 2004 Print: Printable B&W Version

Even though the release of HL2 is nearing, little tid-bits of information still make their way to the general public, revealing more and more about the storyline. Hence, this article is a follow-up to my first piece of speculation, which you can find here. In part this is a correction of previous statements, but also an addition. Be warned, however, that this article can state many facts with certainty (i.e. we're past speculation), so if you don't want to spoil the HL2 plot, do not read on. When HL2 is released, this article will become redundant, but it doesn't take away the fun in collecting information and drawing conclusions. Not that that's my idea of fun, but when it concerns HL2... Anyways, let's go.

After Black Mesa
Recently two .pdf files were released with teasers from the two Prima guides that'll be released along with HL2. In the book 'Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar', we find two pages of an early version of the HL2 script. How this scene is displayed has most likely changed since then, but the information therein still stands to serve as an explanation of what happened between HL1 and HL2. For a transcript of this script, click here.

Here's what happened. The resonance cascade that occured at Black Mesa teleported a number of alien lifeforms into Earth. Now we know that the Test Chamber served as the centre of this vast teleportation event, and slowly sent out 'ripples' which expanded upon the teleport events. While you were battling aliens (and marines), these ripples continued to spread outwards, slowly engulfing the whole of the Earth. Black Mesa was eventually destroyed, but the damage had been done. Xen aliens had invaded the world.

After Black Mesa, Xen aliens appeared all over Earth.
On a piece of newspaper somewhere in City 17 we see that the 'Portal Storm continues'. This is what the invasion has been dubbed. Random teleportation events all over Earth send Xen aliens into the masses and cause chaos and destruction (as the examples in the transcription show). Hard-to-control areas such as the countryside and the suburbs are abandoned and the humans seek refuge in the cities. Thus we find out that it wasn't the Combine who concentrated the humans into cities, they chose to do so themselves to escape the Xen aliens. But where do the Combine come in?

Apparently, they literally spring up overnight. In the blink of an eye, the center of every major city collapses in on itself, revealing a huge abyss, from which the Citadels will appear. In a split second, the Combine Forces would pour from these Citadels and swarm into the cities. Earth's forces were immediately obliterated in what would later be known as the 'Seven-Hour-War'. Their defences crippled, mankind had nothing against this new power.

On that note, it's worth a mention that the leaders of Earth would most likely have accessed their nuclear arsenals against this sudden new threat. Seeing how the Combine had gained control in all of seven hours, it's probable that the Citadels can withstand a nuclear blast, or the Combine knew exactly where to hit in order to disable the nuclear potential. Regardless, any and every effort waged by man to stop this rampaging force failed.
