Chapter IX - Nova Prospekt
This is one of the biggest levels in the game, and it certainly is one of the hardest. You'll have to master the use of Bugbait to master this Chapter. Your Gravity Gun Skills are also pushed to the limit, as those Antlion Guards are back to make an unwelcome appearance.

You start off in front of Door 'A3' in what certainly doesn't look like a nice place. Move through the door and continue down the stairs, past the fenced off building. Underneath the fenced off room above there is a cell. Head on into it but be careful. In the hole in the wall a Headcrab lurks ready to strike. Neutralise this threat with your 9mm or your crowbar. Don't waste other ammo on him. Using the F button to activate the flashlight helps to spot him. After that pest is removed, crouch and jump into the hole and move into the next room.

caption: The Combine seem to have had some fun with some Antlions, looking at the marks on the floor.

The room looks like someone's being trying some DIY; there is blood everywhere. Get out of the bloody mess, and move around to the other side of the window, in the direction of the gunshots. You can see a 'Sentry Gun' lay waste to Antlions as they come. Behind you a door marked 'EXIT' leads the way to some stairs. Continue up the twisty stairs to a pile of building material at the top. Below it is a hole in the fence. How convenient.

caption: Go through the gap in the fence shown here to continue.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31147
caption: Where's Gman?? - On the 3rd Blue LED in this room, the Gman is seen walking up to a window, pulling up his tie, and walking off.

Head into the block 'A5' and you will see the building that was fenced off to you earlier. Go in there, and take up your Health and Suit Energy as far as it will go. The CCTV station in here is off particular interest to you. After a couple of clicks with the action button, getting it to the 3rd blue LED, you should get up to the camera in front of some double doors. You will see the Gman walk up to the window next to the doors, pull up his tie, then walk off past the doors. It also shows the Combine losing an ongoing fight against the Antlions.

Come out of the security room and carry on up some stairs. At the top you will see some Sentry Guns. You're not in front of them so they will not fire at you for the moment. Head into the first room in front of you from the stairs, by pushing back the door. There are some useful supplies in here out of the crate on the table. While you are in there, pick up the filing cabinet with the gravity gun, and knock out the sentry guns by firing it at them. Filing has never been more fun!

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31149
caption: There are 3 Barnacles in this Water Area. Take them out with a few SMG rounds each, and there will be no problems.

Head through the door, which was next to the Sentry Guns, and down a flight of stairs. Your path forward is blocked, so its time to get your feet wet. Go down the ladder to the water, but be careful of the couple of barnacles that are hanging from the ceiling. Take them out with a burst of the SMG or a few 9mm shots. Just don't use a weapon too pricey, or it's going on the tab! There is another Barnacle above the stairs you must go up, which is difficult to spot. Its best to kill it before you're dangling right below its jaws, i can tell you.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31150
caption: Along from the Barnacle Room, is a collapsed floor, allowing you access to the level above you. Watch out though, some nasty Headcrabs drop from the Ceiling as you climb up it.

After going up the stairs, head forward to the open door going past the now dead barnacles, until you get to an area with an open floor. You can get up onto the next level by jumping up using the debris. Get your SMG out ready though, as 4 Fast Headcrabs leap from the ceiling as part of it falls in. Spray them with the SMG while moving, to avoid them jumping at you.

After that threat is dealt with, the only way forward is the large double doors.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31152
caption: The safest way to drop down to the next level is at this point.

You now come to some gates. Unfortunately the gates on your level are locked. If you zoom in using the Z button two Sentry Guns can also be seen guarding the entrances into the room, waiting to say hello. Drop down to the level below, using the hole in the gangway on the left. A dead Combine soldier near where you drop down provides a grenade and some extra ammo, if you need it.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31153
caption: Take cover behind pillars such as these if you hear a Sentry Gun's alarm going off, indicating it has spotted you.

Through this gate you have the same problem of the Sentry Guns you saw earlier. The Gravity Gun can be difficult to position to fire objects at them. Its best to use the grenade you just picked up, by running out holding the fire button down (left mouse button), and releasing it at the right moment to land next to the Sentry Guns, then withdrawing backwards. When the coast is clear, and you've heard the normal random shooting and alarms going off to indicate it's disabling itself, go back into the room cautiously.

If you hear what sounds like a burglar alarm, and you're not robbing a house, take cover. This is the sound a Sentry Gun makes when one is active, and it spots you. Take it out with a grenade, or throw a radiator or barrel at it with the Gravity Gun, depending on where you are.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31154
caption: Do you recognise this place? That is the room Gman was looking into earlier, and the thing on the wall is the camera's interface box.

Near the very top of the stairs, you can notice some white double doors, with a camera looking at you. This is where you saw the Gman on the CCTV camera earlier, and the room he was looking into contains some useful supplies.

The door is locked so use your trusty steel friend, the crowbar, to take out the wooden planks next to it. This allows you to crouch and jump through the window, to receive some more ammo, and health. After getting the goodies continue up the stairs and turn right.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31155
caption: Take the Crowbar to the Wooden panels...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31156
caption: ....and Destroy like so. Then Duck and Jump to get to the goodies

Arm your 9mm while going into this room, as a Headcrab jumps at you from within the boxes. If your handy with the crowbar, take it out with that instead to conserve ammo.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31159
caption: Smash open these crates, to make your way through. In addition, be on the look out for a Headcrab jumping out from inbetween them.

After that, smash open the supply crate on the table to get some more ammo. Then create a passage for yourself to move forward, by destroying the other crates with the crowbar. Go past the metal fence, from which you can see a dead combine soldier, to the end of the walkway. Be sure to equip the Gravity Gun before you jump down on to the floor below. As you jump down, you hear the ground shake, just as an Antlion Guard smashes through the white double doors to the right of you. Why Me?

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31163
caption: Don't hang around with in a corner with nothing to throw at the Antlion Guard.

The Guard isn't something you want to hang around to get to know. Use the shift button to sprint to the small hole in the wall in front of you to get some cover. Grab whatever you can with the Gravity Gun; crates. radiators, barrels and fire them at him. Be careful with some barrels though. If they are explosive and you hit the Antlion Guard when he is too near you, you will be hurt as well.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31161
caption: Take things such as radiators, shown in this picture, and fire it at the soft underbelly of the 'Beast', using the Gravity Gun

The key here is to not get stuck in a corner, so the 'beast' can hit you continuously without escape, but to continue sprinting around firing what objects you can at him. If there is nothing available to throw at him, and you're at a distance, and you have some ammo left, hit him with a couple of Rockets from the Rocket Launcher.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31164
caption: Move away these obstacles blocking the door, to pass through the white double doors.

After your continual assault, the Antlion Guard keels over and dies. (don't feel sorry for him, it was either you or him!) Of course though an Antlion Guard means just that, it guards other Antlions. Get out of there by using the Gravity gun to take away the objects blocking the white doors. Unfriendly Antlions will be dropping from the ceiling now, just fire the objects next blocking the door at them, or fire them on to their backs. When a path is clear, head on in.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31166
caption: Summon Antlions to you using the Bugbait and right clicking on the mouse.

As you head through the door, and after the game saves, some Antlions approach you. Take your Pherapods or 'Bugbait' out and have them follow you to the end of the corridor. Then proceed to throw the Bugbait at the Combine soldiers at the end of the corridor. Make sure that you yourself do not come under fire at this point. Its also safe to take out a weapon and fire at the Combine as well, without being attacked by the Antlions, as you already had the Bugbait out before hand.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31169
caption: When in the passage, run at the Sentry Gun at the end of it, using a barrel as cover.

A fight will ensue between the soldiers together with Manhacks and their Sentry Guns, against the Antlions. Take any Manhacks near you out of the air and throw them into walls. Be careful not to take the voracity of the Sentry Gun's fire yourself. When the coast is clear, head down the left hand side walkway facing one of the sentry guns. Pick up a barrel from near the wall to use for cover, and sprint at it using the shift button. Then shimmy around it when you get to it, so your behind it, and shoot both of them over with the Shotgun.

Another Sentry Gun is behind a gate. You can't get to it now, but you can use one of the crates lying around to cover yourself from fire as you pick up any ammo left by the Combine Soldiers.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31171
caption: This side corridor leads to more Combine, and the controls to open the gate with the third Sentry Gun behind.

Back down near to where you had the first Antlions engage the Combine, there is a side corridor. Down it lies more Combine Soldiers, with Manhacks. Use the same technique again, take Manhacks and throw them at walls, and let the Antlions take care of the soldiers. Alternatively you can 'Kill two birds with one stone' by taking a Manhack and throwing them at soldiers.

After they are dealt with, you have the problem of getting into the room with the Energy Field around it. Luckily you can use the Gravity Gun to take the plug of the wall, to power down the field. If you haven't got the maximum number of Antlions with you at this point, then right click the mouse to summon some more. In the room itself, you see a dead Vortigaunt, tortured to death by the Combine. Move into the room opposite him, and press the switch that has a red light above it. This opens the gate next to the room up. Before you leave the room however, you might want to grab the ammo left on the table by the Combine.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31172
caption: Taking this plug off the wall with the Gravity Gun powers down the Energy Field

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31173
caption: The Room next to the dead Vortigaunt holds a switch, which opens up the gate next to it.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31174
caption: Throw Bugbait over Laser Tripmines, and let an Antlion set it off. Its better than you getting hurt.

Head up the stairs and into the corridor. Watch out for the Laser Trip Mine though. The only solution to them seems to through bug bait over them, so an Antlion runs into it, and sets it off. Make sure you're not standing next to the mine when you do this though.

In an alternative to this, you can use the Gravity Gun to pick up an object lying around, and throw it through the Laser to set off.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31175
caption: Watch the Antlions 'Eat Out' from the comfort of your very own window.

Further on from the mine, a room is filled with Combine Troops. Duck beneath the window here, and through some Bugbait down the corridor, so the Antlions will deal with them. You can then just watch the action from the comfort of your own window.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31176
caption: This switch operates the fence you can see below.

When the Antlions have finished there lunch, head to the back of the room to a red switch. This opens up the gate below, where the remaining Sentry Gun was before. 3 Combine Soldiers immediately come out of the gate heading to your position. Throw Bugbait into the Room's entrance, and once again, those handy Antlions will deal with them when they arrive.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31177
caption: It seems the Combine are having a tough time with the Antlion Guards.

In the meantime check out the CCTV feed on the left-hand side wall next to the gate control. Antlion Guards are shown roaming the facility ripping the Combine to shreds. Lovely.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31178
caption: If you turn left from the Security Room, a Supply Dump can be found on the plaform.

Head out of the room afterwards and turn left onto a platform overlooking the level below. To the right are supply crates with much needed ammo and health. In addition, more ammo and health is in the open cell, at the other side of the barred of area.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31179
caption: This Sentry Gun is easily dealt with, by throwing a grenade next to it.

Move to the location of the now opened gateway after you have grabbed them. The next room is not pleasant one bit. 3 Sentry Guns are in strategic locations restricting your movement. As the Antlions take the gunfire from the first Sentry Gun facing the gate opening, lob a grenade at it. This takes it out with no fuss or bother.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31184
caption: Use the Radiator as cover to get to the big fence, that can take out the Sentry Guns in one go.

The next two are more troublesome. They are behind an Energy field, and are backed up by several Combine Soldiers. Use the radiator off the wall to shield yourself, and run to the location of the Sentry Gun you took out before. Here you should see a chain-link fence laying on the floor. Pick it up, run out, and fire it at them. It should take both Sentry Guns out, as well as any Combine Troops between them.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31185
caption: Use an object lying around to stop the fan by jamming it in the Central mechanism.

There is no way directly through the Energy Field, so a different route is needed. Go through the vent on the ground, near to where you found the chain-link fence. Go through it, and you will get to a Large Fan. Its too fast to get through by simply trying to be quick. You have to stop it rotating. Luckily a number of implements are lying around. Take something and put it in the central mechanism. This will stop it rotating, but only for a short while, so get under it as fast as possible.

Move into the next duct and arm yourself with a weapon. Take out the soldier standing near the end of the next duct, with a swift shot to the head or abdomen. Then take out the plug next to him with the Gravity Gun, to allow your comrades to move through.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31186
caption: Be careful when going up these stairs, as the Combine can fire at you from a balcony high above it.

Now continue down the corridor and up those steep stairs. Combine soldiers await you at the top, so from about halfway up the stairs, throw Bugbait over the top. Continue moving slowly up the stairs throwing Bugbait further down the channel of the room and up on to the balconies, until the Antlions clear the area. If there are any Laser Trip Mines remaining, throw Bugbait over them and let the Antlions take the hit.

Head into the Alcove labelled B4 and throw Bugbait around the corners, using the same routine. They will take off the Sentry Guns eventually, but if you find only one Antlion at a time is running at them use the right click button to call in a large squad and throw some more bug bait next to the Sentry Guns.

Once the Alcove is clear, go towards the stairs and throw Bugbait at them. A large force of Manhacks comes from above, so be careful not to be hit yourself.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31187
caption: The Combine try to reclaim this defensive strong point. Head up the stairs behind it, and continue forward to proceed.

When moving around the balconies, be weary of Combine Soldiers coming at you from further up the complex, as they do try to reclaim the defensive position given to them by the Fixed Machine Gun.

You could of course use this Machine Gun to your advantage, and turn it on its previous owners. You shouldn't need to though, as the Antlions seem more than keen to do the job for you.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31188
caption: Continue moving around the natural passage, towards the Security Centre

Deal with these threats using your SMG, then move past the machine gun and up the stairs to a door where a Laser Trip-mine can be seen. The area opposite this door contains a supply crate if you need the ammo. Carry on in the direction of the mine after picking up the ammo. Have the Antlions take out the mine, or alternatively pick up something with the Gravity Gun and fire it into the beam from a distance. You come to some more Combine Troops if you follow the corridor around, but the Antlions should have no trouble getting rid of them.

Go around to the Security Room you can see, sending off the Antlions to deal with Combine threats. When the coast is clear, use the Health and Energy Suit Chargers to top up your vital signs. You can also see for the first time on the CCTV monitor, Stalkers, and the Combine Elite and they don't look too friendly.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31189
caption: These Stalkers on the CCTV Monitor are a great looking bunch.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31190
caption: The Health Recharger and HEV Suit Recharger should be take full advantage of in here.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31191
caption: The next Security Room also has health in, be sure to take advantage if you need any.

Once your done, click the red switch next to the CCTV monitor to open up the closed gate down the corridor and go through it. There is another security room in here, which should be unguarded. Top up your health some more if you need it, and grab whats in the supply crate on the desk. The CCTV Monitor in this room shows a few Combine running about, but nothing too helpful.

Head around the corridor out of the room, and you catch up with these Soldiers. They are easy to dealt with using your Shotgun, or some Antlions. Around the corner is a more tricky enemy though, a Sentry Gun. Take an object with the Gravity Gun and fire it towards it, or if you don't mind waiting , have Antlions do the task. Its your choice.

To the left of the Sentry Gun is a Laundry Room. The Combine are out in numbers here. The best tactic is too let the Antlions go in and Soak up the Gunfire, while you stand at the door picking of the Combine with your Crossbow. A Headshot with the Crossbow to the Combine is all it takes. If when the room is clear, a Sentry Gun is on its side still firing, you can always pick it up with the Gravity Gun and place it in a Laundry Basket.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31192
caption: You can see the amount of firepower the Combine have at their disposal in this room. Let the Antlions take the brunt of their fire.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31193
caption: Meanwhile, stand near the doorway, with the Crossbow taking out Combine Soldiers with shots to the head.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31194
caption: Jump this barrier in the Laundry Room, and carry on down, and you'll find some useful supplies, but be careful of what lurks in the dark.

Around the Laundry Room, there is the odd supply crate, and plenty of ammo left by the Combine. Top up if you need to. A more sound area to get supplies is a small room to the side of the Laundry Room. On the right of the room, you can jump the barricade in the wall, and move into a hidden supply room. Go into it and get what you need but be ready, a Poison Zombie comes out of now where to attack you from behind. Dispatch him with a few Shotgun bullets to the head. Be sure to take out the Poisonous Headcrabs he leaves behind as well.

Once your done with stocking up, go back to the Laundry Room and go up the stairs at the back.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31195
caption: The Fires in the Kitchen do spread, so keep away from them to avoid any health or suit damage.

In this area there are Combine everywhere, move through complementing the normal dose of Antlions with grenades and SMG fire. Watch out for the fires in the kitchen as they do spread. Dispatch the Sentry Gun in there quickly with a grenade before you are caught up in there. Continue out and you come to a choke point, where 2 Sentry Guns guard the entrance to a fence. Throwing a few grenades in there, followed by some Bugbait will do the trick.

When they are safely removed, kill the Combine Soldiers coming from a room up the stairs and carry on up there. Take the time to get some more health, ammo and suit energy in here, you are going to need it.

Once your ready jump through the damaged window down to the floor of a large room. You see Combine Soldiers moving quickly through the double doors here. Don't bother engaging them, as they are more interested in the Antlion Guard chasing them.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31199
caption: Jump through the window in this room to get to the large room below. You can do this by simply Jumping and Crouching.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31197
caption: Don't bother shooting at these Combine soldiers, they are running from an Antlion Guard and so are not a threat.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31200
caption: If you've got nothing to throw at him, swing out the Rocket Launcher for a few salvos.

They fire at it, join in by getting your Gravity Gun out and hitting it with whatever is available. The soldiers will be killed by the Antlion Guard almost instantly. If it looks like he's coming to hit you, activate the sprint button (shift) and dodge him, or use the pillars as temporary cover. Keep hitting him with objects, and a few times from long range with the Rocket Launcher, if you're running out of options.

After he's finished, shove the items in front of the gate, next to the rubble out of the way. Continue forward, but don't forget to take the contents of the supply crates on the way.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31201
caption: You can't miss the flamming room on the right of you when sprinting past the moving walls.

You see when you reach the end of the alley, two large black walls. Below the stairs is a zombie. Hit him with some SMG shots to the head. You now have to get running, to avoid the walls crushing you, which would only make you useful for some kind of Combine fruit salad. Use the sprint button again to run next to the advancing walls. Notice a hole in a wall to your left near some fire. Use whatever is around, such as a barrel to give you a leg up into the room up there.

Before you stop for a breather and think you are safe, a Headcrab jumps at your face. Shoot him with your 9mm or take him out with the Crowbar. Then drop down the gap in the wall to the left. This leads you into some Entanglement (http://www.hlfallout.net/articles.php/48/).
