caption: The Airboat- Getting you from A to B in style.

In this chapter you're introduced to your first vehicle, the Airboat. A point to note with the Airboat when you first get it is that it isn't armed, so if you want to kill someone you're either going to have to get out or run them over. Also the Airboat comes equipped with a headlight that's useful for spotting supply crates in the darker tunnel areas. Being powered by a fan you can also change the direction your Airboat is facing while in the air! A useful fact to remember when taking some of the jumps later on. So, on with the walkthrough!

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30962
caption: The Labda symbol. Keep your eyes peeled for it, as supplies are usually nearby.

Jump into the airboat and head down into the tunnel. Soon you'll notice the lambda symbol spray painted onto the wall to the left. These symbols indicate that supplies are nearby, and indeed if you hop out of the airboat and climb the ladder to the left of the symbol you'll find 2 crates of 9mm Pistol ammo.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30967
caption: The G-Man always did enjoy a day by the water.

Jump back into the Airboat, motor outside and you'll come across a large red dock and warehouse with the G-man watching you from above. Dock your Airboat, climb out and head up into the warehouse keeping an eye out for the two zombies inside. Head towards the back, climb the broken staircase and make your way across the rafters, taking the left-hand side route past the box. Head towards the ladder at the back keeping your crowbar handy as a friendly headcrab will drop down from the ladder.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30977
caption: A cage full of supplies, a jammed crane spool, a barrel and a crowbar. Elementary Half-Life maths.

Upstairs you'll find a crane cable spool jammed by a barrel which is holding up the cage full of supplies. Smash the barrel with your crowbar and the cage will drop free releasing its goodies for you to gobble up. Just jump into the water, grab as much ammo and health you need and jump back into your airboat.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30978
caption: The first jump. Hit it at speed, and you'll soon be flying like a large 2 ton wingless bird.

Continuing on and you will soon come to your first wall. There will be a number of these in this chapter and there is always a jump either from logs, planks or an earthen bank to get you over them. Take the jump in the middle marked by the signs.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30979
caption: A supply drop from local resistance members. Also keep an eye out for supply crates floating in the water.

Turning right from the jump, you'll come to a bridge where a friendly resistance member will drop some supplies to you. Grab the supplies, take out the scanners (if you so desire) and just ahead will be a jump you have to turn right side up.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30980
caption: The storm drain entrance to the upper blue barrels you will need to raise the second jump.

To the left of the jump is a storm drain marked with the lambda symbol, so jump in and takes you up to the top level. Here you'll find a number of blue barrels which you'll need to push into the water, grab with your hands and then place into a cage underneath the jump.

Once all the barrels are in the jump will float up, letting you gain access to it. Jump back into your airboat, take a good run-up and make Evil Kinevil proud.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30981
caption: You'll need to place these floating barrels underneath the jump on the right there...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30982
caption: ... and inside the cage that's underneath it.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30983
caption: A Combine Dropship with a personell pod underneath. Keep watch for where these Dropships place their cargo.

Once over the jump and down the toxic waterway a Combine Dropship will appear and deploy Metro Cops to the ground. It's easiest to get a run-up and just run the silly fools over.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31025
caption: Pick up a barrel, place it in front of the storm drain entrance, and duck jump to get in.

Heading back to the bodies to admire your handiwork you'll notice another lambda symbol on the storm drain wall. To get inside you will have to grab a barrel, drop it at the entrance of the storm drain and duck-jump to gain access to the pistol and SMG ammo inside.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30986
caption: You can take out the beams under this guy too- but be careful, the second beam is solid concrete so don't hit it at full speed.

Continuing on, speed past the three Metro Cops shooting at you from the bank- it's not worth your while to take them out really. Of course you can if you really want to, I'm not saying you shouldn't- but ammo is at somewhat of a premium on this section and you'll need it for later on.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31024
caption: You can take out these three Metro Cops by taking out their support poles.

Taking the jump to the left, and here you can kill two birds with one stone- or more literally, kill three Metro Cops without firing a shot by taking out the wooden poles underneath them with your airboat. Ahead will be a closed floodgate so double back to the small dock and jump out. Climb the ladder just around the corner and head towards the door.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30988
caption: Man-Hacks- easily dealt with in the close-in environment. Keep an eye out for the Metro Cops inside the garage as well.

Now prepare yourself for inside that door are three Metro Cops and five Manhacks. Take them out, head into the Garage and help yourself to their grenades. You can carry five of these beauties at any one time, and throw them a fair way. The only thing to watch out for is the very long 7-second fuse. The disadvantage of this is that it leaves the Combine plenty of time to run away after you've thrown one at them. The advantage of the long fuse is that you can pick up grenades thrown at you and return them to the sender (with your hands and the Gravity Gun). You can also 'cook-off' the grenade by holding down the primary fire button. The grenade also makes a bird-like chirping noise when the timer gets down to two seconds- so if it's chirping like your pet budgie, don't pick it up.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30989
caption: The Combine mounted gun. Grab a barrel there and use it as a shield.

Grab all the supplies you need and head towards the door next to the Manhack control station. Outside will be a Combine mounted gun so sprint out the door, grab a barrel and use it as a shield. Once you get past him he'll leave his gun and pull out his SMG, so quickly drop the barrel and take him out yourself. Behind the mounted gun is another door and inside are three more Metro Cops. Open the door, lob in a few grenades, wait for them to detonate and mop up the survivors. Inside you'll find more grenades, health and ammo.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30990
caption: The broken gate control. You're going to have to find another to open that floodgate...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30991
caption: ... and those explosive barrels look inviting...

Head up the stairs to the next door. The gate control is broken so you're going to have to find another way to get it open. Glance over to your right and you will notice a few well placed explosive barrels. Shoot them, and this will drop a large beam to smash through the gate. Now the way ahead is clear! Unfortunately setting off the barrels also sets off an alarm, calling in a Combine Dropship. Sprint back to the mounted gun and give the advancing Combine troops a taste of their own medicine.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30993
caption: Watch out for that mounted gun in the corner there- it's manned when you try to return to your Airboat.

Go back into the Garage where you'll meet more Combine troops who have utilized the mounted gun you walked past on your way in. Lob some grenades, take them out (not to dinner) and grab their ammo. Head back outside and start up the airboat, heading to the now open floodgate.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30994
caption: Rapelling Metro Cops- run 'em over. Barnacles- avoid 'em, otherwise they'll snatch you right out of your airboat.

Opening those gates has alerted the Metro Cops in the surrounding area. This next section is basically a gauntlet run with APC's firing RPG's at you and Metro Cops rappelling off bridges. Run over the Metro Cops, swerve to avoid the RPG's, and watch out for Barnacles hanging under the bridges. Also keep an eye out for supply crates floating in the water.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30995
caption: Greenpeace would have a fit. Take the jump on the right there.

Soon you'll come to a bottle neck with the water set alight by the Combine. Head to the right hand side where you'll see a jump just waiting for you to take. Jump over and head into the tunnels.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30996
caption: The lambda sign again- and how about that. More supplies above!

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30997
caption: Take out these bricks to drop the basket full of supplies.

Head through the underground tunnels until you come to another lambda sign on the wall. Just above it is a basket full of Pistol and SMG ammo, along with health and HEV batteries. The basket is connected to another basket full of concrete bricks, so pick them out of the basket and the supplies will drop down. A hint though, make sure you place a brick into the supply basket to stop it from floating back up once you've taken a few items from it.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30998
caption: Argh! They closed before you could get to them! Double back and look for the small maintenence entrance...

Head through the tunnels and back outside, where you will come to another floodgate the Combine has closed just in time to stop you getting through.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=30999
caption: ... and there it is! Next to the lamp.

Double back and you'll notice a small door near a dock and underneath a wharf. Use your crowbar to jimmy your way in through the door (Using the crowbar for its designed purpose? No, get out of here). Inside you'll find more ammo and everyone's favorite six-shooter, the .357 Magnum revolver.

While powerful, it doesn't have a secondary fire mode and you can only carry a total of 18 rounds, so make sure you take the time to aim with this baby. Ammunition pickups for the Magnum are also very scarce. However it rewards your patience by being able to kill pretty much anything with a single shot to the head, or two shots to the body.

Once you pick up the Magnum, three Metro Cops will come through the opposite door. Punish them for interrupting your quiet moment with the hand-cannon and head up the stairs.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31000
caption: Some supply crates. Take cover from the Hunter-Chopper inside.

This next section is a running battle with Metro Cops and a Hunter-Chopper. The Hunter-Chopper makes a distinctive sound when preparing to fire, much like the spinning up of minigun barrels. When you hear it be sure to take cover behind the shipping crates. Head through the path between the crates making sure to stop by the very rusted light green crate containing two supply crates, and you will soon find yourself outside a warehouse.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31001
caption: The Metro Cop infested warehouse. Take your time, be methodical and thourough. John Wayne tactics aren't going to work here.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31002
caption: Jump across these shipping containers to make your way to the other side.

Inside are a large number of Metro Cops and it is your best bet to pick them off from outside with the Magnum. Once they are down, head to the ladder on the far right hand walkway and start making your way across the shipping containers. More Combine will appear so take them out as you see fit.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31003
caption: Health and HEV energy dispensers. Make sure you don't expose yourself to the Hunter-Chopper outside.

Continue through the warehouse, taking cover from the Hunter-Chopper when needs be and smash your way through a wall of boxes. Inside will be a Metro Cop waiting for you, as well as three more on their way up from the staircase. Take them out, head down the staircase and stock up on health and HEV from the dispensers. Take care not to expose yourself to the Hunter-Chopper while recharging.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31004
caption: Sprint along this pathway to get to the floodgate control tower.

Suck in a deep breath and head outside again. You'll make your way to a small tower which contains two Metro Cops, two mounted guns, and the control panel for the floodgate.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31005
caption: Use the mounted cannons to take out that pesky Hunter-Chopper. Give it a taste of it's own medicine.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31006
caption: The floodgate control panel. This will open up the gates to let you past.

Take out the two silly idiots cowering in the corners and use the mounted guns to give that pesky Hunter-Chopper the good news. Once the Hunter-Chopper is gone open the floodgates and head back to your airboat.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31007
caption: Another Hunter-Chopper with mines. These little critters aren't easily avoided at high speeds, so watch out.

Head through the floodgates and you're soon confronted by another Hunter-Chopper, this time armed with round mines. These mines detonate both on impact and after 7 seconds, so be sure to avoid them as best you can. For the narrower sections filled with mines you can simply wait for them to detonate before driving through. Be careful not to wait for too long though as the Hunter-Chopper will then try and take you out with its guns.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31008
caption: Slide up this floodway, take a right, and plunge back into the chaos.

Head along the waterway, slide up the floodway and over to the other side and continue your cannonball run.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31009
caption: Take cover (and supplies) inside this pipe.

Head on and dive into the half-buried sections of pipe for a brief respite from the Hunter-Chopper although this respite is not for long. Be sure to grab the supply crates inside.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31010
caption: You can use these two strategically placed logs to reach the upper banks.

Heading out into toxic water, take the two logs on the left hand side up the wall and punch it as hard as you can. Take a right, and head towards another bridge and tunnel by taking the left hand side bank to get up there. Popping out the other side of the tunnel you will come across more bridges containing rappelling Combine and Barnacles.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31030
caption: Take out this Metro Cop, supplies, and jump all at the same time.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31013
caption: Follow the ramp on the right all the way up along the dock, jumping out the other side near the floodgates.

Continue on, take the next right, and head up the ramp on the right hand side of the red 'X' on a black background sign. Continue along the dock towards the floodgates. If you fall off the dock you can turn around and head back to the red 'X' for a second go.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31089
caption: Head to those chimney stacks on the left...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31015
caption: ... where one will become a victim to the Combine shelling...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31016
caption: ... but is easily jumped over after all your experience with the previous jumps.

Taking a left out of the floodgate, you'll see a large chimney stack fall victim to Combine shelling. Don't try to beat it through, you'll never make it (trust me I tried about 40 times) so double back for two seconds or so, turn around, then jump the middle section of the rubble.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31016
caption: ... but is easily jumped over after all your experience with the previous jumps.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31017
caption: This ladder will take you to the upper portion of the gate puzzle.

Take a right after the chimney and dive into the tunnels for another break from being shot at. Here you will have to raise a jump so you can get over the wall. Climb the ladder at the end of the pipes, jump down and follow the planks to a small balcony with a washing machine.

Push the washing machine over the edge and follow it down. Grab the health at the bottom of the elevator, climb out, and pull the lever which will drop the elevator and raise the ramp. Jump back into your airboat and over the jump, resting assured that Evil Kinevil is now smiling down at you with kind eyes. Follow the tunnel until you come to a small resistance outpost.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31021
caption: Push the washing machine down into the lift...

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31022
caption: ... and pull the lever to raise the jump.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31023
caption: It's not quite Xzbit, it's not quite 'Pimp My Ride', but it's the next best thing you'll in find in City 17.

Here some resistance fighters will be kind enough to pimp up your Airboat with a Hunter-Chopper cannon. No stereo though or 18 inch mags though. The cannon has unlimited ammo, but it has a magazine size of 100 rounds. After which you will have to wait for the cannon to recharge its ammo before firing again.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31026
caption: Your new armed Airboat. With the cannon mounted on the right hand side, you can cover all of the right but can't shoot to targets to your left.

Small bursts seem most effective unless you're at point blank range. In which case you'll want to unload the weapon as quickly as it can fire. Grabbing the health and ammo they have stocked inside, head back out to your airboat and test your new weapon on some barnacles hanging off the roof.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31027
caption: Take this jump, swing hard left and continue down the waterways.

Head out, take a left, and jump the corrugated iron. This leads into a small floodgate area which the Combine will close off to trap you.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31028
caption: Once the gate closes, swing back around and punish the Metro Cops for wasting your valuable time.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31029
caption: Use this piece of fencing to get out of the closed dock and power you way across the concrete to get out the other side.

Quickly turn around, take out the Combine with your cannon, and head up the piece of fencing which has fallen into the water. Head along the side of the dock until you get out to the other side.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31031
caption: Watch out for haning Barnacles underneath the walkways- the G-Man is the least of your problems at the moment.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31032
caption: Head up the bank to the right to get into this pipe.

Run the gauntlet again, keeping an eye out for supply crates in the water. Don't forget that you can shoot down the RPG's from the Combine APC's with you cannon. Drive under a walkway over the canal inhabited by a Barnacle and a visiting G-man, continuing on into another large tunnel.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31033
caption: Inside these two shipping containers you will find much needed supplies for the upcoming battle with two Combine APC's

Here you will come to a small 'mini-harbour', the entrance to which is marked by a chimney, a sunken red tugboat and two red shipping containers. Jump out and grab the supplies in the shipping container as you will need them to fight the two Combine APC's that are just around the corner of the tugboat.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31034
caption: Jump out of your Airboat, sneak around to the back of the red shipping container...

Taking them out is a little tricky, it's best to concentrate on killing on APC before taking on the second one. Once you have taken them out, head to the far corner of the harbour where there is a gap in the fence next to a red shipping container.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31035
caption: ... and set these barrels alight to open a path inside.

Jump out of your airboat and walk around to the back of the container. Inside will be two explosive barrels, and if you don't know what to do with explosive barrels by now, you obviously didn't play enough with matches when you were young. This will open up the shipping container so you can drive through with your airboat, taking a path under the docks and to a jump into another tunnel.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31036
caption: A Hunter-Chopper performing a mass-deployment of mines. Here your best bet is to fire from a stationary position.

This will take you to an empty basin where you will have a showdown with that helicopter that's been hounding you for the past half hour. Hose down the chopper with your cannon and watch out for the explosive barrels in the water. Once the helicopter has reached a certain level of damage, it will start deploying masses of droppable mines (how many can that thing carry?) and these are not easily avoided. The best strategy is to park your airboat on the bank near the edge of the basin and stay there while hosing the chopper down.

Once you've destroyed the helicopter, drive around the edges of the basin collecting the much needed supply crates then head over to the control gate marked with bright red lettering. Climb up the ladder on the side, open the gate and drive through. Drive up the ramp and head towards the red warehouse where more Combine will come out but are easily killed with your cannon.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31037
caption: This gate will let you gain access to the red warehouse above the dam.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31038
caption: Climb up the ladder and turn this wheel. You'll have to hold it down until it gets all the way to the top.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31039
caption: Inside the red warehouse you'll find two Metro Cops, health and plenty of ammo.

Head inside the warehouse where you will find two more Metro Cops and a massive supply of health, ammo, HEV batteries and grenades.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31040
caption: The G-Man keeping an eye on you again. Head down to where he is and down to the dam.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31041
caption: The right hand side lever will open up the dam to let you jump through in your Airboat.

Head back outside and towards the dam, noting once again the sunken hollow eyes of the G-Man and head towards the observation hut of the dam. Inside is a switch marked 'Gate Override'. Pull it and head back to your airboat.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31042
caption: Jump through the newly opened gap in the dam wall using these two conveniently placed logs.

Jump through the newly opened dam by using the logs place so conveniently in front of it and enjoy the massive fall down the other side.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31043
caption: A dead end. Or is it? Head over to the electricity substation to the left there.

Continue on where you will come across an electricity substation. Near the dock is a ladder marked with the Lambda symbol, climb up and head around the back of the substation.

There you will see a door marked with danger signs, so head right on in. And welcome to Black Mesa East.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31044
caption: Ah ha! The lambda symbol. There must be something around here.

image: http://www.hlfallout.net/image.php?id=31046
caption: This entrance looks ominously inviting...
