Hey all,

I just buit my new mid-range system, but my Windows XP is acting all wierd on me. It started like this: First, I formatted my hard drive, then I installed Windows XP. But now it asks activation key and every time I put it in (the key that I used to use) it says that it is already used/registered.

I am have my own legit copy of Windows. But how to get rid of this activation thingy? on_12.gif

Specs:

AMD 3000 Venice @ 1.8 Ghz
256 400DDR Ram
GeForce 6600 GT
400 Watt PSU

Well, if you changed some major hardware on your system, you will not be able to re-use the same activation key. So depending on what you did, you *may* need a new key.

Your best bet is to call Microsoft and have them give you a new activation key.

You think that they will give me a new key with no problems?
EscapeArtist
Is it an OEM version of windows? If so you can ring up and ativate via phone, thats what I did after an hardware upgrade.

If you changed hardware on your system then this is something that is normal for XP installs. Sucks but it is the way it is.

And yes, they will give you a new key. I have had to call them before for my personal stuff and for work a few times.

When XP first came out it used to be a longer process. They have gotten better at it so you should have no problems.

Ok. I also forgot to mention my new motherboard : MSI K8N Neo4-F I just researched that Windows also stores motherboard signatures in the key id information, naybe this is the real reason.

Ahh yes. If you have changed the system board, it is considered a major hw change to your system. Thus, the reason your old activation code does not work. Give them a buzz and get yourself setup. :D

Wow, I just had a major LAn surge. Lost my internet connection. So, thank you all for the advices. I will definetly call Microsoft. I need to wait when my mom comes back, cuz she took my cell phone. :(

I had this problem. It only lets you activate a key like 5 times. After that you must call up for it to be activated. Then you can use the key again for an indefinite number of times

Oh, is that why my key stopped working? I bought a new OEM XP. Thanks, Microsoft.

Dear God, please let someone break Microsoft's monopoly. I don't want to go through this sh-t every time they release another half-assed product.

Its to stop piracy, lol.

All you have to do is call Microsoft, explain the situation, and if it truly is a legit copy, you have nothing to worry about, OEM copy or not.
