Aside from the obvious holdovers (G-Man, Vance, Kleiner, barnacles, ichyosaur, storyline, etc), what references to HL will there be?

KNOWN:

The train sequence has already been mentioned, though unlike HL, the train sequence in HL2 is far shorter.
Also known, Barney makes a joke referencing your past menial duties in Black Mesa (and I don't mean the remark about how much easier it was back at Black Mesa in the video).

SPECULATION:
I'm betting there will be, at some point, something similar to the ON A RAIL sequence (and no, I don't mean the free form vehicles.) Even if it's for 5 seconds.

I'm also betting there will be a lab somewhere (Vance? Combine?) which features corpses of Race-X.

why have an On the Rail level if you have the ability to put in free form vehicles?

and Barney does say something about how helpful Gordon's MIT degree, he says it after Gordon flips a simple switch. (PCGamer.)

Barney will probably be the one referencing most to the BMRF, like the video where he says "Remember when we thought Black Mesa was the worst it could get?"
and he'll probably reference to that beer he owed you.

Do you know just how many cans of beer he owes me when I just kept hitting "e" on him?

Nice speculation. Maybe the lab would also include Xen aliens (such as in OpFor)?

Please look up the definition of a "reference". Has nothing to do with capability -- it would be there as a reference, an in-joke to those who played the first game.

Can you read? Already mentioned that. It's under the KNOWN stuff.

Freeman never meet Barney in person!! :phew at least what we play in HL1

They probably meet in some others occasions like with all of the "barneys" (the other security guards)

I really enjoyed the "On A Rail" level in Half-Life 1. (I enjoyed the entire game, it's my favorite game) I wouldn't mind seeing something similar even with the new free form vehicles with their very well done driving system. But, I just don't see where something like that would fit in.

They are all supposed to be the same "Barney." Kind of strage how it works out though.

I also liked On a Rail, I don't see why some people hate it.

YES the first time, but when you play BLUE SHIFT, you follow the story of one of them, barney calhoun, the same of HL2.
BTW he is the first cop that we saw in the very begining of the game (he is knocking on a door with a flashligth on his hand), I think that is the first "IMAGE" of the game.
