im making an ultra texture quality mod, to push the source engine to its limits, and the game to look like what valve promised...

ill post any updates here, on this thread.

oh, and i need your help fragger, or anyone else... see... i have this problem. do i just change the amount of pixels per inch, or do i actually have to add more detail?

Simply remaking them would be the best way - although most probably the most time demanding one - to make them better quality.

If you just resize the pictures, they'll look the same but the game will lag. You need to create the new textures at the new higher resolution in order to improve quality.

If you do that, all that will happen is that it'll look the same or more likely is that everything will look out of proportion. If you have 60 bricks on a section of wall, and you change the pixels per inch to triple, you'd end up with the same sized wall, but with 180 bricks showing on it - which just looks wrong. If you're going to retexture, I think it'd be quite cool if you used photographic quality stuff! It'll take feckin' ages though.

Also... "to make the game look like how valve promised"?! Isn't HL2's graphics engine good enough for you at the moment then? I think it's brilliant, although I do think photographic textures could be VERY cool. Just try not to make it sound like Valve are shite and lazy. Sorry to moan! :blush

However, good luck on the ol' mod!

i know

but you can apply AA to text, why not an image?

*EDIT*

i just thought of something...

maybe if i get some photoes of some REALLY high quality stuff, and then use the healing brush on the new texture with the old texture, i get a mix between the 2, which looks really awsome, high detailed etc....

Ah, touché! Becaaaaaause, text is vectoral and images are not. Even though it is possible technically, I don't believe there is any way you can do it.

lol

doesnt matter anyway.... i found a great way to do this... its gonna take ages, but it will work...

im getting high resolution pictures from real life, and im using a healing brush on the old pic to the new pic, what results is a VERY good quality texture... looks awsomes....

only problem is the normal maps.

aa is on the outside of an object in hl2
therefore on the outside edge of text.
the only way you could use aa on a texture is if you wanted to have text on it, or some kind of 3d thing (like a sign) on the texture.

someone please correct me if im wrong but other that similar to above, sureley the ony way to add aa to an image is the add transparent pixels to the edge of every pixel- simply bluring it.
