For the love of God, why is my computer freezing every time I play a DirectX game? I just bought the HL2 Gold Package and can't even play CS:S! I have posted this before, but I have tried what some suggested (Underclocking the video card, turning the AGP speed down to 4x) but nothing works. I doubt it is a cooling problem since my CPU is running at 45 degrees C under full load. Since the last time I posted this, I upgraded from an FX 5600 to a 9800 pro, but it still freezes. If someone solves this problem for me, I will forever be indebted to you and your family, and you will have touched my life forever. My system specs:

Athlon XP 1700+
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
DFI LanParty KT400A motherboard
Random PCI sound card (since my integrated died)
768MB DDR 266

If you fix this, you are God as far as I am concerned.

I sort of remember installing the motherboard and AGP drivers, but I will uninstall them and try it again. And yes, I have DirectX 9.0c.

I am going to try taking out the sound card this time... even though I hate playing with no sound, it is better than not playing at all. That is, even if this works.

Well it turns out that the sound card was the problem... of course that means that I don't have sound. Thank you all for your help.

I was going to suggest taking out the sound card, but I guess you figured it out for yourself. :8

say again? If your agp bus was off, you wouldn't have graphics. you can lower the speed from 8x to 4x (or lower) but why would you do that? Maybe you're talking about Fast Writes, which should be off for best performance in games.

As you can tell, the AGP speed is off. So is Fast Write, but I don't care about that. SO what should I do, move it to 1x 2x or 4x or just leave it as it is?
Oh and by the way this is my older computer, on the one with 9800pro the AGP speed is also off.
