I can't bare to grasp the idea that someone hasn't played HL! You definately MUST play it before HL2. The graphics are not the best of all the games out right now, but the story is so great and it's just an amazing game, no matter how old it gets. It was game of the year, what 5 years .. I don't know, but still awesome.
Me and my friend always play the SP over and over, our fastest time, w/o cheats, was 2hours and 15minutes non-stop.

If you need further example, Half-Life is somewhat like The Maw from Halo. There are multiple factions fighting one another (Commandos against Aliens, Covenant against The Flood). Plus, neither would mind having your head on a platter on the side. Also, you have some help in the form of the scientists and security guards, whereas you have Cortana in Halo. The only difference is that you can't beat Cortana to death with a crowbar once she's served her purpose....

Hmm well he's leading the resistance in City 17 for Half-Life 2, fighting along side Gordon Freeman as well. So he must have had the odd pay cheque from the G-Man somewhere along the lines!

Calhoun escaped with some other scientists through an old transporter that they fixed up. He didn't necessarily have to have worked for G-man. We dont even know if Gordon WILL be working for G-man in HL2. It all depends on what happened in the time span between the two games. We'll find out when we play it.
also, IMO Farcry should never EVER be even CONSIDERED for any award other than graphics. That game is nothing but eye candy. The AI was crappy, the story was crappy, the characters were crappy, and the gameplay was uninspiring. I have no idea how the hell that game got such high ratings. I spose the mags and such just got sucked in by the graphics...sad.
