I'm having this problem where HL2 will "chunk" when I enter into diffrent sections of a level. I'm not talking about loading areas, I mean entering a new room will cause the game to pause (Audio loop occurs). This can take from 5-10 seconds to return to the 30FPS I was getting before. This makes me think the game is casheing the level or something. My system runs the game decently, just "chunks" during these few moments. I've messed with the video settings and they dont seem to have much effect on this issue (Resoulution changes, lowering details). Is anyone else getting this problem? Anyone know a setting that will smooth this out?

System Specs:
AMD 2600+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
1GB Corsair XMS 3000
GeForce 4 Ti4800 128mb
Raid0 2xWestern Digital Raptor 10000RPM

*edit*corrected specs (wrong amount of video memory) /embarrassed

hmm youve got some pretty nice specs there (except the TI i guess) so i guess that would be the first thing id be blaming. or you could try oc'ing that 2600+ they run quite easily at 3200+

I got that a several times too, but it would only loop a half a second of audio for me....It maybe the sound card drivers-need to update them maybe. All I know after i updated my audigy gamer andi turned down audio to medium quality it stopped happening...just my experience...may be worth a try perhaps.....However we might not share the same exact issue.....

Yep - as that link points to a 128meg card.

Plus the 4800SE is a terrible terrible card and I'd chock it up to that.

Could the game have issues with raid configs??

Same happens to me... that would suck if it was my 5.1 setup that was the cause.... it make the game much more enjoyable. Its annoying as piss... anyone have a guess to a cause?

Thanks.

Well, I know this has been a big debate, but if I were to get a new video card should I get:

GeForce 6 series? or Radeon 9800 sieries?

basicly ATI or Nvidia, which card would run the DirectX9 better?

I'm pretty sure I get that, but I know what it is. My motherboard only has a 256K L2Cache, so it lags down my gaming at points. Other than that, I'm getting a crisp 30-40 fps.
Steam, XBL, and PSN: Dothius

Your motherboard has cache? Im guessing you mean your CPU.... and that I dont think matters all that much... but I suppose I could be wrong. I have a feeling it has to do with audio.

ok all, here's the dealio. I swear. The EXACT same thing hapens to me, so I got pissed and decided to find out what was going on, so after tweaking the video and sound settings with no help, I dropped down my console, lo and behold, there it is. If you look in your console window after it happens, HL2 is looking for a materials information file dealing with glass, tries to cache it, and fails. Now, this may just be me, but try looking in your console, and if the same thing is happening to you, POST IT HERE so Valve will get a heads up as far as the size of the problem in numbers.....
