HL2 Performance Not What It Should Be?

Hi All,

I'm running HL2 on my system perfectly. I've got a good rig, and I can't complain about the game's performance at all.

My friend, however, isn't so lucky. He's got an Athlon running at 1300 MHz (so that's what, a 1500+?) 512 megs of ram, and a Radeon 9600 Pro. He's been running the game at 800x600, with all settings at medium or low, and he's visibly chugging and getting stuttering audio. It gives him a headache to play, and he's frustrated.

He's well above the minimum requirements, any ideas? CS:S runs fine (40-50 fps) and the stress test gets about 35fps.

[shameless bump]also, he just reformatted, so we've got all the newest drivers, all the latest stuff, no idle tasks messing with performance[/shameless bump]

Try -dxlevel 81 in the Launch Options of HL2 Properties.

well. how good do you expect it to run with that processor?

i'd say better than really bad chugging at 800x600 with low detail.

i've been reading reviews saying they have it running well on old systems with GeForce4s.

Probably because they have a lower Dx version running by using the -dxlevel command.

Exactly!

It's also works slowly on my 2500+, just face it: He needs a better processor.
