Stuff you might not have known about the beta leak

Talking with a friend of mine (cousin of Josh Weier, VALVe staff) i learned that the leaked beta wasn't even HalfLife2 at all!!

it sounds funny, but here's the story. The hacker who wiggled his way into VALVe was only able to get ahold of the VALVe test data server. He was stealing what he thought was the actual HL2 game files, but indeed he was downloading a copy of the VALVe trash-bin. All the files stored on that particular server were never meant to be used in the final product at all. The maps were all prototypes that were scrapped for better, future versions, all the weapons were crap, half the Ai was non-existant and for the most part, the gamedata was only that of HL1, it wasn't HL2 at all. What you may have seen or played was only a modified HL1.

Yes, there are no doubt people who have heard this or have assumed such. i've read about the beta leak and i never heard this part of the story. i can only assume it hasn't been shared. But the 'beta' wasn't a demo of any kind at all, it was quite literally the VALVe trash pile. Nothing was "stolen", only a few secrets about game locations and other tidbits that were simply scrapped and never used. VALVe laughed when the figured it out, but were obviously a bit more careful about everything after that.

...I don't know about that...

EDIT: You're lying or your friend, or whatever.....Valve would have told us that if it was the case..

Yeah Gabe would've been like "What a moron!!! He stole the crappy stuff from our Trash Bin that we decided not to use because it wasn't good!!"

Gabe and friends have said that the leaked stuff was vital info to the game and that people were asking him if the company would shut down over it, so I'm sure "trash bin contents" would get everyone so riled up like that.

They pulled a lot of stuff out of the trash then and put it into the final game.

None of the textures and other assets (apart from a few sounds, and those were probably re-made as well) from HL1 were used for HL2. I've never played the beta (I really wanted to, but I resisted the lure of the dark-side), but from what I've heard and read, it was all HL2 content. Remember that HL1 and HL2 run on completely different engines.

You have no idea what you're saying. Did you even play the beta? It had the water, it had the larger maps, and many other features of the source engine. (so says my friend....). Your friend's cousin's grandmas' grandma's grandson (cousin of Josh Weir Valve staff) is no longer credible.

i have a question did that hacker (axel G) actually STEAL the beta files (by i mean stealing and deleting them from all valve computers, so they lost the game) or did he steal like just take copies of the game and gave info to everyone on internet?

This is false... TONS! I repeat TONS! of the maps/models/data that was in the beta is in the final... Most of the coast maps and canals maps made it in and the ravenholm maps remain pretty much unchanged in general...
The beta was pretty much a 1/4 finished version of the final...

Hacked into VALVe comps, pretty much dled the content onto his comp, thenuploaded it up to the net.
