The chase began. My pistol was firmly gripped in my hands, my goal was ahead of me. I followed. It was simple. Every few seconds there would be a corner, a dumpster, something. Enough cover for it to keep on running, and not enough clear distance for me to shoot. It was intelligent, it knew I couldn't fire on it when running at this speed.
I was silent. I was God, I was pure power. I ran as an executioner. In control. Calm. The fear, the disgust that I had had just seconds before was gone now, replaced with this rush. My mind cleared and focused on my target. Suddenly, an opportunity. I levelled my pistol and shot it, hitting it in the right shoulder.
It howled horribly, almost filling me with pity. I had had no reason to fire... it hadn't been my enemy. As I hesistated it jumped around a corner, and, once again, but this time less sure, I followed.

After spitting the vile taste out of my mouth and removing the flecks of solid from my trousers I looked up, and then I felt like vomiting again at the sight before me.
Before me I saw something that no human could ever imagine, not the sickest of the sick. This was something truly disgusting, something truly monsterous. I couldn't move, my legs were frozen in place, I didn't know what to do. I did the only thing I could think of, I screamed. Upon hearing the sound of my voice, the....thing in front of me stood up really fast, turned around and ran. I just sat there, stupified, wondering what in the world was going on, and why it was scared of such a thing. Holding my nose, I decided to run after it, curious about where it would take me....
I chased the creature through alleyways and deserted streets, not knowing where it would take me. I needed to find answers and this thing was going to give me them. I was running after it as fast as i could, and then out of no where it suddenly stopped, and i was hit with the greatest fear. My first thoughts was that the creature was going to take a strike at me, but with its size and grotesque features, i wouldn't think i could survive its attack. but instead of attacking it was sucked into the sky, i then looked up at where the creature had vanished and to my astonishment the clouds swayed as if an invisible force was pushing them away. My whole body tingled," what is happening?", i asked my self. Suddenly lights appeared all around me!

Sorry it's wierd, I don't write often in first person...
I rounded the corner fairly quickly, but didn't manage to catch sight of the beast as it made it's escape. I could hear it's footsteps echoing away down the shadowed street. The shops of the desolate strip were empty, many damaged from the chaos. The remaining intact display windows were covered in a thick layer of dust, even though they had only recently been vacated.
A feeling came over me as I waited at those crossroads - rekindled fear primarily, but thoroughly mixed with a kind of rabid excitement. I couldn't understand why I was so afraid - it had seemed such a pitiful thing, and had made me full of curiosity. The weapon felt suddenly very heavy in my clutching hand as I reconsidered my action in shooting the creature. Guilt burned in my mind - I knew I had made a rash decision, but I could not undo that mistake.
A shrill cry of pain and rage erupted from nearby, resonating within the volume of the area. I whirled around with my pistol at the ready, expecting to see before me the terrifying visage which I had been pursuing - but finding only empty air. The cry continued but waned in intensity, and I instinctively chambered a round - anticipating the worst , only to be let down yet again. I began to feel somewhat like a marionette hung on strings of emotion, dancing to the tune of an invisible hand.
The wind began to pick up, and I proceeded down the deserted street on a quest for the unknown - remembering something, now haunting, that I had often heard as a child, 'Curiosity killed the cat.'

It's funny because every post changes the story's tempo, it keeps going from fast to slow to fast to slow. An intresting read, and something cool to participate in.
Slash101, you should post, although we did change your story completely.
G'night all.
EDIT: Naw, I'm going to bed now. I've taken up most of this thread myself, it'll be more intresting to have more people posting with different ideas. I'll return.

I crept forward warily, not knowing my destination. The sound of the wind blowing through the abandoned buildings was enough to set chills up my spine. Unfortunately, the white noise wasn't quite loud enough to cover the clanking of my equipment, which seemed to have aquired a malevolent mind of it's own. Even the pins in my grenades seemed to have a vendetta against me, metallicly broadcasting my movement for those who would listen.
As I approached the first building, a new noise stole into my awareness. It first bordered on the edge of my perception, but gradually rose in volume to a very audible level. As the noise grew to a nearly intolerable level, I realized that it was not only growing in volume, but approaching. Panic began to well from within me as I realized my limited options.
I ran heedless into the building with my weapon drawn, ready to kill or be killed.

A surge of power and hate ran through my vein, my head was in pain. I ran wildly about, but the pain was beyond me. I stopped, before me stood a dark figure reaching out his hand and whispered in chilling tone, "Join me, son." Stunned by his last word, I stood still and at last fainted. The light when thin, everything was dark...
Slowly, I opened my eyes. Where was I? Who was this mysterious figure in black? What in God's name just happened? I opened my eyes, only to find myself in the dark yet again. Then, I saw a small slit of light, the only natural thing I had seen since waking up. How the hell did the world get like this overnight?
Then, the slit widened and I realized it was a door, and someone was opening it. It was the man in black. I couldn't make out his face, but I knew whatever it was, it wasn't natural. He beckoned to me, come. Uneasily, I followed him, through the dimly light corridors, not knowing where I was going, nor who this man was.
Finally, we came to an empty room, with only one light source from a small hole in the ceiling. As he closed the door behind him, he moved closer to me, closer to the light. I backed away, not knowing what this mysterious figure wanted with me. As he stepped closer to the light, his facial features became more and more recognizable....then I realized who he was, and why I was here. Recognition slowly settled in, my past became clear to me, every horrific moment, everything I had repressed years ago, I felt like I was living through it all again.
I hadn't realized it, but the dark man had finally stepped into the light, and I finally saw his face, his eyes. What I saw in those black pits chilled me to the bone.
