I have an M1 Carbine, SMLE Enfield No.4, and a Mosin Nagant.
If you are looking to get into firearms, go surplus. Go for surplus bolt actions first, although you have to be careful. You can get surplus rifles that are in great condition and unissued, but you can also get weapons that have been used and corroded and look like crap.
Surplus rifles arent the best hunting rifles, but if you want to go to a range and have fun shooting all day surplus is the way to go. For example, when I first wanted a gun I saw a 30-06 at walmart for 300 dollars. Well I went to a gun show and I bought a Mosin Nagant, made in 1945 and it was never fired or issued to a solider, got it for 120 dollars. Mosin Nagants are great for starters who want to shoot a large calibur. Plus you get the rifle from Enemy at the Gates!
When I got home with the rifle I had to take it apart (very easy, the rifle is basically 4 major parts) and spray all the parts with gunscrubber, then wipe it down and put it back together and I got.

Mosins use 7.62x54R Ammo, there are some problems but not big ones. Most ammo is surplus and corrosive, which is good because its cheap, but you have to clean your rifle whenever you get home from the range when firing (You should be cleaning it anyway). You can get a 440 Round box of good ammo for 40 bucks or so, but keep in mind it is corrosive.
Or you could use comercial ammo, which is cleaner and usually more accurate. But alot more expensive!
20 Round boxes of new ammo usually run about $13 dollars.
Mosins are awesome rifles, they are easy to maintain, great begineers rifle that dont want a weak .22, ammo is cheap, commercial ammo is availble, common Mosins range from $80-160 or so.
I have some links but keep in mind that your going to need a Federal Firearms License or get a shop ot let you use theirs, there is a transfer fee involved but go to your local gun store and ask if they do transfers.
Model 91/30 Mosin Nagant Rifle 70 Bucks.
AIM Surplus is a great place for surplus weapons, I have done business with them in the past and they only import the best rifles.

But tell me, does your uncle hunt for the fun of it or because he is desperate for food?

They don't hunt for food anymore, they live in houses and buy food from markets.

Don't they still have reservations where they hunt for food and live?

Someone was shot to death randomly last wednesday on my street, so I've been thinking about this recently too.
I don't really have a problem with people owning guns, as long as they are heavily licensed and proven to be competent in handling both the weapon and their emotions. If we are going to have people on the streets with weapons, then I believe that they should be as heavily trained and monitored as any police officer.
