Theoretically, if you're not there and/or don't observe it, you cannot prove either way. By definition, however, no. A sound requires a membrane to hear it.

I think you would agree when a tree falls dell sucks, I think if you measure a graph comparing dell suckage to tree fallage, they would matchage.

How can it make a sound if no one is there to hear it?

Be nice to him. He doesn't have the social skills to express himself in a good way. That is what years of bullying does to you.

It's a fact: When a tree falls it doesn't make a sound; it creates air pressure that can be interpretted as sound only by the human (or animal) ear. The tree doesn't make a sound if no one is around. College physics can't be wrong.

That makes no sense.

Despite the fact ath no beings are there to pick up and interpret this sound, the fact that the tree is still creating sound waves does not change.

Sorry, let me try again: If a tree falls, the fall and impact on the ground creates air pressure only. In order for air pressure to be interpreted as a sound, the ear and brain has to recognize and make the following air pressure into sound. I hope that makes more sense.

If by make no sense you mean perfect explanation, then yes.

He stated that a tree does not make any sound when it falls. I can agree with his explanation for that. But than he says the tree doesn't make a sound if no one is around. So does that mean a tree would make a sound if someone is around? :zombieattack

Yes, becuase the ear and the brain of the person present, is interpreting the air pressure as sound.

Although we really need to know this rhetorical question, I don't think one persons answer would satisfy everyone, it's just matter of perspective.

Just like a few members already said, the question is not written correctly. The only REAL answer to this poll is therefore "dells sucks"!

The questions is: If a tree falls and I am standing SOMEWHERE, does it make a sound...the answer is: It depends on where I am standing when it falls.

And about the "real" philosophical question: Yes, it ALWAYS makes a sound!

(what sound does "one hand clapping"?...also from "that simpson episode")

Your wrong. "Sound" is a product of the brain. Well, I know what i've said is fact, sorry you guys can't wrap your heads around it.

What's with all the philosophical questions tonight? My fave question "Do the things you can't see really exist. ie. when you leave a room and go to another, does that room still exist? How do you know?"

yes. because there will always be some kind of living organism existing inside that room.
