The May 2006 issue of Computer Games Magazine, which includes a cover feature previewing 3D Realms and Human Head Studios' long-awaited FPS Prey, has also included fresh information on 3D Realms's epochally long in development Duke Nukem Forever.

The game has been worked on in various forms for almost 10 years, having been originally announced in April 1997, and the update describes the current state of the title, which was viewed at 3D Realms' Texas studios: "mainly just pieces of the game in progress and tech demos", including "an early level, a vehicle sequence, a few test rooms", among others.

...

3DR's George Broussard also demonstrated world interactivity that includes Duke standing in front of a computer and emailing the player, if he provides his email address for the game. But, according to the piece, Broussard was bashful, overall, about showing off the game, commenting: "The problem is that when we show it, people are going to be like, 'Yeah, whatever'. Honestly, at this point we just want to finish it."

Saying they just want to finish it now makes me feel like it's gonna be like Soldner :(

Z0mg?!?

But anyway, I've truely lost interest in this game. I can't really trust what they are saying half the time.

I don't even want that game.

The only reason I know about this game is because it's been in development for so long. I've never played any other Duke Nukem game, but by the sounds of it, it's going to get a rush release. Basically this game will probably be the series stopper so don't look forward to any other Duke games IMHO.

Im actually looking forward to it, i frequent the 3D realms boards and the devs post there sometimes, and by the sounds of things, its going well.

Technology-wise, Duke Nukem Forever originally started development on the Quake II engine, before switching to Unreal, and, according to a Wikipedia entry, is now working with a heavily modified custom engine that includes some small elements from earlier iterations of Unreal Engine.

that's how long this game has been stuck in the realm of no release.

I think Jerry "Tycho" Holkins summed it up best in the first Penny Arcade book about a comic done back on 11-3-99:

"You can't even do a joke about Duke Nukem Forever anymore. It's not possible. The ridicule it has amassed by this point is so dense that it forms a kind of armor that satire can't penetrate."

When you've been ripping jokes since last millenium about a product, what new can you possibly say?

I wonder how much money they've lost on it.

Too much...
Oh well, once we see it at E3 3897 we'll all know wether or not it's good looking or not. Duke Nukem has never set a new standart for gameplay so why should it now? I suppose my grand children will be happy when it's release, then I can tell them stories about Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem 2...
