Moderating Procedure Guidelines?

I can't believe this thread.

You (the member) do not get to dictate to the mods, policy.

The mods do have a 'rule book' in the staff forum, and that should be enough.

Decisions on appropriate punishments are looked at on a case by case basis.

Thanks.

I didn't dictate any policy. I merely suggested some ideas to help improve staff/mod-member communication.

Like if you tie specific warning levels with specific punishments (no punishment, suspension, long ban, permaban), it can help members understand, expect, and accept the punishments better.

I don't think I'm suggesting any policy changes (heck, I don't even know them yet lol). I'm suggesting some organization and communication ideas I guess.

P.S. What's the difference between "Staff" and "Moderator" ?

What about when you get tricked by another member into posting a link to porn and get banned? Is there a rule for that?

How could you ever get tricked into posting a link to porn? Gah. Anyway, there is already a mod rulebook in the private forums.

Magnum, just drop this issue. Moderators don't need to post their guidelines and they don't need to do this. Despite some minor flaws with the mods, they're doing a fine job. And obviously you're going to be met with some backlash because you are not yet a true respected member of the community.

Maybe in the future you can bring this up when it's an actual problem, but not now.

After reading Chomp's thread and looking throughout this site for something I couldn't find, I wanted to put forth this idea.

How about having a set of guidelines and procedures for moderators in addition to the forum/discussion rules?

You could set up a system that determines what punishments are handed out for what actions. You could have a set of guidlines stating that after a specific number of warnings/usernote (depending on the forum software) a user will be suspended for a predetermined amount of time or something.

You could also set something up where a warning/usernote (depending on the forum software) is considered "expired" or simply gets removed after a period of time.

These are just some idea off the top of my head, but something like that, I think, would give members a better idea of where they stand.

If there is already such a system, I apologize, I'm new, and I looked but I didn't find such a thing so I posted this.

We do have this already, it's just not for public consumption. :smile

It's not as rigid as you're asking for though.

We have guidelines, we follow them.

They do not need to be made public for any reason. The public are not mods.

There is a TOS. That is all that needs to be read and understood by members.

Moderators and Site Staff differ in that one can actively mod, edit, and ban while the other cannot. Both should be treated with equal respect as both make the site run.

There is no point having a strict moderation system. Members will end up being unhappy, and finding the line between a broken rule will come under discussion. No matter how specific it is written issues will be made.

Enjoying the site is easy. Don't flame, don't post porn, and use your head. There are countless members here who do that and never, ever have any issues with moderators. Some members find this difficult. Why? I don't know.

Us moderators know what needs to be done and we can do it. We are also right here for help. The report button? It helps a lot. Problems? A PM will do just fine.

Who's going to ban a moderator? I mean think.....

(arguing about Christmas presents in 2005 doesn't deserve a ban)

Even before I was a mod I never even received a warning. Though I don't really know what you're trying to prove by saying you were here before us...

Enigma ring a bell to anyone? He might have just been staff, I can't exactly remember but he was part of the site and did get banned.

Out of curiosity could you post a copy of that in this here thread, or even make a sticky or somthing. I'm just interested to see what it says.

I myself have no problems with any of the mods and love them indeffently.

It's not that hard to stay out of trouble. I've never been warned throughout my stay here, which has been considerable.

Exactly, I think I've only flamed sombody once before, never been warned because I try and keep myself looking neutral, even if I am trying to express a point that is opposite of sombody elses I try and keep it as non-hostile as possible.
