Isn't it ironic that one of lgChickens main points in his initial post is how people are failing to stay on topic, and we find ourselves exactly in this position in the same thread.

Stay on topic please.

Edit: "Staying on Topic" also applies to discussing and analysing "Cat Picture Posting Ethics".

Then I direct my 'random pic' at you sir.

While you may consider it random, I found it an appropriate response for people declaring they wanted to 'have' new days.

Sorry I bothered to joke about this obviously gravely serious issue...

Anyway, back to the subject of whether or not HLfallout should concern itself with recreating old times. (lol)

Still missing the point and your sarcasm isn't helping.

The point deserves to be missed in my opinion, but I see that frame of mind isn't welcome in here.

Correction: Flaming/Flamers should be contained. But don't bother the community with it.

We are not discussing whether or not a Cat picture helps constructive site discussion (the name of this forum).

Joking around is all well and good, but it can be irritating to have to filter through random and irrelevant pictures to get to the core of the debate happening in Site Discussion threads.

Site Discussion is not the forum for jokes, the Off Topic Forum is, as frank as that sounds.

This is the last time I will ask people to get back on topic. If you've got something to add opinion wise on the number of religious threads, people going off topic too often in threads and the opinion that flaming has become a big problem or something similar but equally constructive and valid, then do so. But, going off on yet another tangent in this thread will have its consequences.

I think we should totally get rid of the 'leeway' that is allowed in debates and not allow people to flame at all.
It brings down the rest of the discourse.

A HLF Social experiment.

This is a common misunderstanding of the Debate Thread Rules that has seemed to be going around of late.

This paragraph from it:

Mr Bond said:

We'll allow debates on the "touchy" subjects as long as they stay (at least nominally) intelligent and flame-free. We're a bit more lenient on the OTF discussions (that's where people can argue over whatever) but if threads descend into personal insults they'll be closed. Topics which are really just trolls/flame-baits will be closed.

This seems to be interpreted by some people that they can flame and get away with it if they're in a debate. They are of course wrong. The rules merely are stating that if we as Moderators find it too difficult to keep a thread clean and flame-free by way of Editing, Deletions, Warnings and any other tools at our disposal, we'll simply close the thread.

As a rule of thumb, under most circumstances:
One flame post/a series of flame posts before a moderator deals with it = One warning.
It's the only way to keep debates civil.

I'm not sure if people who are flaming are getting warned or being treated leniently at the moment because I've been a bit inactive, but, I've got some spare time for a long period now so I'll be keeping a very close eye on which flamers and trolls I can brutally attack with the Iron Fist of the Law. :whacklook

Personally, I love swearing at people over the internet, but that doesn't eclipse my need for the sanctity of HLF.

I guess I'll tone down my invective now.

Glad you're back, Mr Ironfist.

I agreed with Pie21's statement on the first page of this thread about having more "exclusive" content to make this site more persoanlised to Half-life. However I belive just talking about it won't get anything done, the staff have to get off their bottoms and do it, (having polls, competitions etc).

Not necessarily. We can easily start a new Photoshop contest ourselves like that old Gabe one. All it takes is an exploitable picture and a thread. As for new polls, it can't be that hard to change them, so if we can suggest a good poll topic, whoever it is (mods? site staff?) can go copy paste our topic. Them needing to do less thinking/work equals more motivation to make a change.

Another idea: we have plenty of people nothing short of obsessed with Gmod on here, so come up with a theme (famous movie scenes?), knock up a new thread and you're set.

Also, welcome back mods.

I tried that once when I was doing the POTD. I attempted to get weekly themes running (including "Famous Movie Scenes") but they were mostly all failures. Most people just did not want to participate.

I'd like to see something like be pulled off.

Alright, I'll start thinking up a plot for a machinima and writing stuff down. Yoggs, if you have anything you think we can use as far as story, let me know. I'm clearing out my PM box so PM me if you're interested in participating in a machinima.

It's probably not not wanting to participate so much and not being bothered because it's too much effort and leave it to someone else. It takes me about 5 minutes to bloody get into HL2 on this box, and then I have to run it on lowest settings. I pledge after my upgrade (this week), when I can run things, to support any such endeavor. It'd be nice to have some competition for POTDs, rather than accepting whatever's submitted because there's nothing else.

The Machinima sounds like a great idea. Start a thread so people can discuss it.

I'd say the worst thing that has happened to HLFallout is the lack of posts. I know I don't spend as much time here simply because nobody else posts, and the scenery doesn't change.

Also I think that the "official" threads are so long and dull. It is difficult to join in without knowing what has happened in the previous 500 pages. So I just don't read them at all, and instead go check out digg for my news and entertainment.

I think most of the Official Threads are absolutely fine. The system threads, as well as the movie thread, in my opinion work nicely and allow for other people to join in very easily.

The movie thread has had countless discussion about films, and bigger films end up with their own thread anyway.

The system threads do not limit the forum. Whenever a major game is announced, or there is major news, they get there own thread and are not forced into the Official Threads. However, when it comes to smaller news which really only is of interest to those with the system the Official Threads.

After all, we're not a Wii, Xbox360, or PS3 news site. Major news always gets its own thread for specific discussion, but I don't think everybody really cares about, or has enough to discuss, when it comes to news like "Super Paper Mario Release Date".

I agree. It is time we expanded upon the other gaming by adding the 3 major consoles, or just let everyone post a bunch of 360 news all over.
