I am taking a scuba class to get cert. in open water diving, and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it. If so what can you tell me about it?

I'm a licensed scuba diver, the training courses to get your license are great fun. Just be careful where you step when you hit the ocean floor. I thought I was standing on solid ground on one of my first dives, and got scared shitless when a giant sting ray that was bigger than any human tried to wiggle out from under my feet. Scuba diving rocks, there are so many branching paths and licenses you can get. I recommend going on a few dives through sunken ships. You never know what you might find.

I just did a project in school on the bends, so I doubt I'll go scuba-diving anytime soon. :P

Never really interested me all that much, I have a big fear of drowning. I'm cool with snorkeling but that's it.

Oh yeah just don't head to the surface too fast. I was on a dive with this chick and she came up to fast, she was bleeding out the ears for hours. That or you will die.

Thanks for the soothing advice.

Well its through my school and apparently my instructor holds the record for most students ever taught in the U.S. So, I think I am in good hands.

Funny, I'm likely to take scuba training my next term. :8

I don't have experience with it, but I have snorkeled in deep water in Puerto Rico. I'm hoping to use a scuba diving certificate towards career interests, such as marine biology.

It doesn't matter who teaches you, the rules to safety are pretty basic. Don't come up too fast, take breaks every few metred during ascent, never go alone (especially at night), and never explore pitch black areas where you are not visible to others. I know it sounds childish, but honestly I have seen so many people get in serious trouble just by making little mistakes.

It's one of the best things you can do as long as you follow the rules, I must have been on at least 70 dives in the past few years, the Australian coast is full of good sites, so hopefully you live in a good area for it.

Never been scuba diving, but it must be intense. I've only gone snorkeling in the oceans around hawaii and it was amazing. Very good hobby or career.

you know, I've never had a girlfriend or done anything non-platonic with the opposite sex, so I'm having a little difficulty. It can't be done right as long as humans are involved. You can make up and maintain a personality to fool someone, but a computer can't do anything similiar.

Generally a bad idea to step foot on the ocean floor in any case (IMO). If it's sandy then yeah, you wouldn't know what's hiding underneath, and if there's coral then all the more reason not to step anywhere at all; if not for yourself, then for the benefit of the coral.

I've been on a few dives myself, seen some interesting stuff like nurse sharks, sea snakes, turtles, etc. It's good fun once you get past the awkwardness of the gear and the changes you have to make to simple things like breathing, when you're underwater.

Like I said, it was one of my first ever dives, and I paid dearly for it :P

I'll be in Ocean Engineering in the fall so I'll be taking scuba diving for that, I've only been once before in a huge pool, pretty fun, but I'd rather go in the ocean :D

I'm a certified "One Star" diver, under the CMAS board. I did about 25 odd dives last year. Time now to get my own equipment.
