I don't have experience with it, but I have snorkeled in deep water in Puerto Rico. I'm hoping to use a scuba diving certificate towards career interests, such as marine biology.

It's one of the best things you can do as long as you follow the rules, I must have been on at least 70 dives in the past few years, the Australian coast is full of good sites, so hopefully you live in a good area for it.

Generally a bad idea to step foot on the ocean floor in any case (IMO). If it's sandy then yeah, you wouldn't know what's hiding underneath, and if there's coral then all the more reason not to step anywhere at all; if not for yourself, then for the benefit of the coral.
I've been on a few dives myself, seen some interesting stuff like nurse sharks, sea snakes, turtles, etc. It's good fun once you get past the awkwardness of the gear and the changes you have to make to simple things like breathing, when you're underwater.
