Also, I bought Mass Effect out of stupidity. Back in November there were no interesting games coming out at all and everyone kept talking about how amazing Mass Effect was, I don't even like RPGs yet I bought it anyway.
I played for a total of 5-6 hours and didn't like it so I never bothered playing it again.

Can I have it?

Why are games so mediocre lately? Excluding a few games that are essentially interactive novels the last game that made me go "HOLY ******* THIS IS AMAZING!" was The Darkness.

Here is a list of games I bought after I played The Darkness back in July '07:

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror Syphon Filter 2 was the last good Syphon Filter
GTA: Vice City Stories I never tried this because I got bored of Liberty City Stories very quickly, but I blame that on playing it on the PSP and I hate handhelds.
Hitman: Blood Money I really enjoyed Blood Money
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Please see my comment for GTA:VCS
Call of Duty 3 Treyarch sucks
Chili Con Carnage Never heard of it, but sounds craptacular
Medal of Honor: Airborne Shite
Bioshock Amazing
Stranglehold Meh. Average at best.
Halo 3 Above average, but nothing to rave about.
Orange Box I loved Portal, enjoyed Ep 2 and TF2, but I'm not a huge multiplayer fan so I stopped playing after a bit...
Mass Effect Amazing
Kane & Lynch Terrible
Resident Evil 4 Wii Still need to try this!
Super Mario Galaxy Got bored after the first couple of levels
Ninja Gaiden Great game if you can get past the camera
Devil May Cry 4 I don't like this series at all so I didn't try this game. I hated the demo.
BlackSite Area 51 Tried the demo, hated it, didn't think about it again.
Advance Wars Dual Strike I love the Advance Wars games. They are the only games I can stand a handheld for. I might pick up DS for these.
Advance Wars Day of Ruin See above
No More Heroes Never tried it. Looked kind of half-assed
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Not my kind of game
Rainbow Six: Vegas I really enjoyed the first one and the second was good, but enough new stuff to keep me interested for long
Soldier Of Fortune: Payback Never tried it, but it seemed like the extreme gore was the only thing going for it.
Guitar Hero 3 GH3 sucks. Rock Band rules.
Condemned 2 I still need to pick this up.
Army of Two Haven't played it. Don't really have any desire to. Looks mediocre at best, so I guess it belongs in this list.
Dark Sector The demo was okay.
Grand Theft Auto IV I enjoyed it a lot, but I think it's a bit too long and outstayed its welcome which is why everyone is hating on it now.
FEAR Files FEAR was good, but nothing great.
Lego Indiana Jones I want to try this.
The Bourne Conspiracy I might try this if I get the chance.

Now out of those games, these are the ones that actually made me go "******* YES!":

Condemned 2
Devil May Cry 4
Stranglehold

The rest of the games in the list are either overrated and extremely boring (GTA 4) or just plain horrible (BlackSite).

What's the deal with recent games being so boring to play? Other than MGS4 and maybe the new Gears of War I'm not really interested in any of the upcoming AAA++ titles. I was looking forward to the new Alone in the Dark game but apparently that blows so I cancelled my pre-order.
Every company is way too busy thinking about new boring gimmicks (choices in Mass Effect) that they forget about the gameplay. Combat in most games is horrible and there's no feeling that you're shooting/hitting someone. The music also blows, here I am chasing X guy at the end of GTA 4 and the game is about to end, is there any song playing in the background to make the scene memorable? No, there's just pure silence.

ugh, video game developers

edit: Updated list.

Out of the games you said "YES" to and the ones you left in the "mediocre" list, it appears our preferences for games are very different, leaving me little hope for Condemned 2 which I wanted to pick up.

I've heard good things, I have it but I haven't finished Condemned: Criminal Origins yet. I' m eagerly awaiting Bloodshot.

Last time I bothered counting them I had around 300 games, but I never bothered counting my PSX, Gameboy, and Super Nes games.

Quite a collection then. I've got about 111 I think. Sadly I lost a lot of my SNES and N64 games.

It sounds like you've just become more selective. The quality of most games has always been kind of mediocre, I remember this from paging through the titles in my Game Genie book back in 1990. No different from now, though my standards have changed.

I don't know what to tell you if you found Condemned 2, Stranglehold, and Devil May Cry 4 more amazing than BioShock, GTA4, or MGS Portable Ops. I've got Stranglehold, it's good, but it's also repetitive and not very long.

Games don't impress me as much as they did last gen (PS2/Xbox days) but a few like BioShock, COD4 (particularly multiplayer), and GTA4 made it worth getting one of the new systems for. I'm sure MGS4 is excellent as well, but I won't be playing it until I get a PS3 (good job not shipping enough of the bundles Sony!).

In fact, the games (either franchises or "spiritual successors" like BioShock) are as good to me as they have ever been - I just don't like the current hardware situation. I've got a 360 and it's an unreliable turd, PS3 is still priced outside of the type of adoption that would generation better software support (or at least less sloppy support) and the Wii isn't even capable or running modern games. These seems like an enormous drop off to me where last gen you could get a PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox for $550 six months after the Xbox and GC debuted, and all three performed well relative to when the hardware was finalized. PC gaming was a lot better to me back in 2004 as well. MMO's kind of flushed that down the toilet.

Anyway, it sounds like you should stick to straight up action games if DMC4 and Stranglehold is what you like. You'd probably like Ninja Gaiden 2 as well. Those type of games have been the same to me since I played the first DMC and Shinobi on PS2. The graphics have gotten better but they play exactly the same.

Just chiming in to say that since I last posted in this thread I've bought these games:

Alone in the Dark
Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted
Resistance
Ratchet & Clank Future: ToD
Mercenaries 2

Ratchet & Clank was boring as hell so I never finished it.
Resistance was a pretty fun if when I replayed it on easy difficulty, anything above that is frustrating since the difficulty is pretty unbalanced. The game plays like a 90's FPS yet you can get killed pretty easily on Normal/Hard.
Mercenaries 2 was pretty good at the beginning, but gets very frustrating after you reach 50% completion.

Alone in the Dark, MGS4, and Uncharted were awesome. Everyone should get those games.

i think your just worn out like a senior sorority chick. you've done everything you can and now you need a break. settle down with a few games, watch more tv or movies then come back. you need to mix things up, or make your own levels or something.
