I don't see the issue with the cover system since a lot of the time in 1, especially near the end, you'll pretty much be hugging walls in corridors and shooting enemies so you don't get instakilled.

Exactly. I find it a bit weird how you (Gyro) can like 1 more, since you'll have to spend a lot more time being careful and looking around corners, whereas in Max Payne 2 you just bullet-dodge into a room and have an epic shoot-out. :P

As for Max Payne 3, it seems to me the use of the cover-system is entirely optional and mainly added to make the game more playable for console gamers. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up using it from time to time though, since it could be nice to use cover to enter a room undetected and suddenly jump out with bullet-dodge and clear the entire room.

I actually just finished mp1 again and just started 2 and like the first one for the reasons you list as bad. It's one of the extremely few shooters that are challenging.

Agreed. I swear games are getting easier. Am I the only one who is bothered by the change in writing? Max seems to have gone from an intelligent, cynical and wise-cracking cop to a brawling swearing shouting man? I definitely prefer the first two.

EDIT: Ah, they've taken down the videos until the release date (which is today or tomorrow?). I'm glad, otherwise I would have watched the whole thing.

Yeah the amount of time spent in Max Payne 1 hugging walls was quite large, I think having cover will make things look a lot more cinematic especially if the cover is destructible.

I already knew GT reviews were terrible, but to me, this one takes the cake:

This game should be PC only, then there would be no need to make things easier or add cover.

EDIT . . . The gametrailers review is fucking horrible, DO NOT watch it. It also has major spoilers.

Read the kotaku review, it's well written (other than the obvious typos) and does a good job of conveying what you want/need to know about the game.

I put the link in spoiler tags to deter anyone who has a really good memory or is going to play it tomorrow.

Sorry mate, thanks for doing that. I didn't actually watch the full review myself, just looked at some of the comments and then watched a random bit of the review in which the reviewer complains about being out flanked by enemies... Didn't really have to watch any more after that.

No problem, I have so much going on before the end of the month, I'll surely forget before I finally get the game. You know, since it comes out on the 29th. 2 weeks after it releases on consoles . . .

Sigh.

Was this really the game I had waited for? Did I really want it? Regenerating health was nowhere in sight, the object in my control would have to deal with his wounds just like my past would never fix itself. Would the difficulty feel just right? The trials and tribulations in my life were like a dark pit that kept growing even bigger, could this video game be a mirror of my own soul?

The difference is in mp1 you peek a corner, assess how you're going to attack, then do so. If things go wrong, you learn from the mistake and devise a new plan of attack. The new one looks like it's too easy to just hide behind cover, line up a shot, peek for a few shots without risking any damage, and repeat for some drawn out one sided shoot out.

I read in some reviews the only con in MP3 is that the checkpoints are spaced far apart sometimes. The best solution would be to have a checkpoint saving system but also support quicksaves if the player so desires. I can't count how many times I'd get frustrated to get to the end of a level in MP1, die, and then realize I hadn't saved once that level since the start.

EDIT . . . I used regular bullet time more in MP1 than MP2, like gui said earlier, the enemies in MP1 can't aim for shit when you start rolling.

The fact it's possible to play in such a lame way, doesn't mean you're obligated to do so.
At least from what I've gathered from the RPS preview, you will not have to use cover unless you want to.

EDIT: Since us PC gamers are still waiting for the release, here's another weapons video:
