Edit: Ok what? You don't even have to be playing TF2 to get items anymore? http://forums.steamp...ad.php?t=955798 Although the steampowered thread may not be so big (at time of posting this) I've found a few other threads elsewhere where people are confirming this.
Double Edit: I can confirm this myself, just logged in, and had a kritzkrieg that I never previously had. This is a major upgrade to the item distribution system.

But when I say this, I do mean valve's reaction as well. Valve had every right to crack down on the idler. I won't argue against that. It's their game. They also have every right to take away idled items. I won't argue against that. But all because they had the right to doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
Valve saying that the idler is wrong and banned is fine. Just tell me and I'll stop using it. Inform me that if I do use it, I'll get the items taken away, great. I'm cool with that. But I think the problem a lot of people have is the fact they cracked down MONTHS after the idler first came out.
It's not as if 3rd party apps haven't appeared before. There was even the ingame command that unlocked all the medic weapons when they were first released. But valve reacted promptly and strictly to all instances of these. The achievement unlocker, the console command, the scout weapon unlocker. These were all cracked down upon in a matter of days and at most 2 weeks or so.
The idler on the other hand, has been out for months and has been met with no public valve reactions other than wishy washy ones. Enough time passed by so that the player base viewed the idler as okay. Simply put, the people who did idle didn't see themselves as cheaters unlike the the users of past programs, and that's why this crackdown has them feeling frustrated and betrayed.
Do I defend idling? Now I don't because valve has clearly demonstrated that it is a form of cheating. I know I felt a twinge of guilt when I first joined an achievement_idle map when the update first came out. But it's not hard to see why many people were lulled into idling in the first place. The extreme rarity of hats and valve's seemingly complacent reaction to the program convinced many people that valve was okay with it, even though they apparently weren't. If valve had reacted timelier, not only would much fewer items be lost but many players wouldn't feel betrayed like they do now.
I'm not annoyed about losing items. I just lost a single hat. I am annoyed that valve chose to impose punishment indiscriminately rather than establishing the wrongness of the idler and removing items for anyone who continued to idle. I'm also annoyed that this punishment was simply aimed at the idle program, rather than the program and all the servers currently in existence. Lastly, I'm annoyed by all the holier-than-thou players who view those without halos as scum who aren't worth healing, but I can't blame valve for that one. That's just human nature.
