So I'm in the market for a new cellphone. I currently have an LG Voyager with Verizon and its pretty much dying. Anyhow, I think I want to get a smartphone. I've thought about the Droid and the HTC Touch Pro 2 from Verizon. Any thoughts?

Or do I bite the bullet, switch to AT&T, and get an iPhone?

Thoughts are much appreciated.

Cheers folks!

i dont think you will loose any way, the are all good phones. I would go with the droid only because it has multitasking. You can also check out the win7 phone. I wish i could get a smartphone, but I rarely talk on the phone and hate to pay $30+ for the data plans.

I don't have either, but I've heard from friends that do the Droid is a much better choice than the iPhone. I doubt you'll be unhappy with either though until you start seeing your phone bill every month.

You can always ask on Engadget. If you're lucky you'll get a thread full of 50% rage and 50% advice.

iphone doesn't allow you to read your email/browse the web/answer a call/etc at the same time, its always one app available at a time, but the iphone has massive amounts of cool apps.

I personally say go with Droid. Root it and you can do a lot of customization for it, plus you can get free Google Nav with it. Plus if you're into the app center, last figures I saw the majority of apps on the Android Market were free, while the majority on iPhone app center are paid, but there is a larger variety. Android also doesn't have to go through a mediator, while with the iPhone, if Apple doesn't like the app, it gets yanked. (Unless you jailbreak it, then you're good either way)

My brother in law got the Droid when it came out and loves it. He rooted it which can even allow you to overclock the phone and other fun jazz like that. He doesn't use the physical keyboard much, and you can just use the touchscreen if you want to do that. Another phone to consider would be the HTC Droid Eris. Doesn't run 2.0 (which has Google Nav) but is all touchscreen based plus is has HTC Touch Sense (just a pretty UI by HTC). It's a bit thinner due to the lack of the physical keyboard, and my co-workers like theirs. I'm waiting for my Verizon rep to send me my Eris so I can play with it and get a better review of it. The Moto Droid is more powerful than the Eris. If you're into Twitter/Myspace/Facebook and etc, then there's the Moto Devour which just came out. I see it as a mostly social phone with the heavy integration with all the social websites.

(I like Verizon better, but the iPhone is a solid phone, but you already know that) Everyone just has one though.

Then if you can wait... you have two more options (if not more)

There's a rumor that the Nexus One is coming to Verizon March 23rd, but I haven't heard an official word. Think of a beefed up HTC Droid Eris.

And if you wait even longer (though it may be 2 years from now, and you'd be eligible for an upgrade) Verizon will get the 4G iPhone when their LTE network launches, however it's going to be a good while before that launches. Now you may think I'm bullshitting you on this, but at this point it only makes sense. LTE will be using simcards and have a larger network than WiMax currently does. And what would help with the launch better than anything else? An amazing phone to kick off Verizon's new LTE system (that's up to 10x faster than current 3G). Verizon's already done the groundwork to show that the iPhone will work pretty much everywhere on their highspeed network as opposed to AT&T's...

Anyway, hopefully I wasn't too confusing for you. If you want to compare the phones in terms of specs, go to phonescoop.com and hit the compare button.

Also, if youre thinking about the Eris, it's free at Best Buy right now.

If you have any questions, shoot me a PM man!

Wow man now that is pretty informative. I will have to go to the Verizon store to check out a Droid and see if I like it. Though the Eris sounds cool as well. I've heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone coming to Verizon but looks like its not going to happen this year which sucks. I can hopefully wait a few more weeks anyway and then I will be eligible for a new phone with Verizon's new every two year. I had to be locked into a contract but I need a new phone so maybe just maybe the Droid will work.

I only heard about the HTC Touch Pro 2 a few weeks ago who has one (from Sprint) and he says he loves his but I know Verizon carries it as well. Maybe I will check out a HTC Droid Eris or wait for the Nexus One. Is the Nexus One that much better than a Droid though?

Thanks for more information man! I may be shooting you a PM soon!

Ah sorry I forgot about the Touch Pro 2, I don't really know a whole lot about it since my store doesn't carry it so sorry I can't be of more help with it. The biggest difference other than a physical keyboard is the processor in the Nexus One, 1GHz snapdragon has Android 2.1 (but there's leaks out for the Droid right now). Droid barely has a bigger screen, but the Nexus One is AMOLED so the colors really stick out. If you get a chance at the Vz store, check out a video on the Droid. Looks very nice.

I have an HTC Touch Pro 2, and I pretty much love it.

Of course, I will point out that there's a few possible show stoppers with Windows Mobile 6.1. HTC did what they could to cover up WinMo, and the TouchFlo 3D works amazingly, but there's still the WinMo 6.1 and 6.5 memory leak. There isn't even a good fix for it, you have to get a clean RAM program for the phone to clear up the memory every so often.
The battery life kinda sucks too, but that's about the same with all smart phones from what I hear. My roommate has an iPhone and has to constantly charge it as well. Other roommate has a Droid, and it's the same.
Um, also, recently the Internet Explorer program died on my phone, and I really dont know of any way to reinstall it other than reinstalling the OS again.

I really do love my phone, because it's capable of alot, and one of the best phones I've had, but It's far from perfect. Plus, it has a slide out keyboard. :)

Thanks for the replies guys, keep em coming! Stoic I agree with sui, I thought Palm was dead. (I did not look at your video yet but I will later when I get back home). What do you like about the pre that makes it a contestant in my decision?

Although no launch date is set for it soon, the HTC legend is looking promising!

Guys! Are you kidding! There is only one true option:

Posted Image

It has the best of all mobile worlds.

First of all, don't even entertain the thought of getting an iPhone. They're technically inferior in EVERY regard (I'm not just being a fanboy here (though I am partly), you can actually measure them on anything), and they cost more? Go figure. All you get is more apps, except that you don't need more apps.

HD2 vs Droid (or Milestone in Australia) is a tougher decision. It seems to come down to the physical keyboard vs better specs in the end. I went with the HD2, and I've ordered it from Blue Fly Mobile (AU$696 with shipping). It was only after a long and thorough discussion on Whirlpool though, so read this thread to get an idea of the subtleties between the two (and presumably with most other Android vs WinMo phones).

It also comes down to what you want to use it for. WinMo, it seems, has Android beat for business use, but they both seem to be closing all the gaps rather quickly. If you want to mess around with apps (one at a time, lol), sure, get yourself an iPhone. Just have a good justification for why :P.
