#1 Posted 08 April 2010 - 12:13 AM
I've got an old PC sitting around around with 2.2Ghz Celeron, 1 gig of ram and 250 gig of space. So my question for you HLF is what should I do with the PC? So far I've gotten sell it from HotGore and turn it into a media server from Reddington. Any others?

Do not use it as a media/file server, for one, you will waste countless hours trying to set it up right, and two, its a massive power consumption for a full blown PC to work as a server without it being regularly used.
I really haven't had much reasons to use a file server beyond hobby experiments. Either I use my 500 gig usb hard drive, or I uploaded on the clouds for retrieval from any computer.
Give it to someone who needs the internets, it will be good for your karma.

If you want to turn it it into a media server, the idea will hover on the edge of your mind for a while, and you'll never get around to actually doing it right.
If at first you don't succeed, you fail, so just get rid of the thing.
Alternative:
Got any relatives with kids who could use some nerd training?
Install openBSD on it and give it to them, in only a few years, a monster will have emerged.
