Hoax?

Some Indian guy rang up today asking for my dad by name but my mum answered. He claimed to be working for MS or something saying that they'd received a lot of errors from Windows and that our computer was infected with a worm and was sending out loads of crap. He then asked her to turn the computer on (I presume to try to get her to divulge IP addresses etc) but she replied we have 3. So he said to turn on the oldest one and claimed it had XP but then she said they're passworded and didn't know the password and so he hung up.

Looks to me like a hoax to me as MS shouldn't know our number or name and any chump could assume that the oldest would have XP.

Any of you guys heard of similar happenings?

Yeah it's a pretty obvious phishing

Just be glad your mum did not have the password to the computers.

What I find hilarious is that your mother doesn't know the passwords to the computer. Do you keep her in the kitchen so often she never has time to go on?

It's a good thing she knew nothing about that sort of thing.

I'm just happy my mom knows jackshit about computers and would probably leave this sort of thing to me.

Had another couple of calls. The last 1 my mum managed to get the name of the company and phone number which match up with what is said on "their" website (http://www.gogreenpc.net/) and they deal with stuff like viruses. She said she was calling from North East England, so my mum asked which town and after a long pause it was Broadway Street, London...obviously excels in geography. She was either being told what to say or she was looking it up on the website as there was long pauses for everything.

I've tried ringing them just to play along to see what kind of crap they want to try but got no answer.
