So, HLFallout needs the community to get some new ideas for where we are to take this website further.

The staff have been thinking about ideas and we were thinking it would be a good idea to keep the community involved with the ideas and development of the site.

Our idea was the reduce how many forums we have making it simpler and easier to navigate the entirety of the forums and also increase the activity of the site.

So we urge if you have any good ideas or anything you have wanted to be applied to the site for a while but haven't been able to voice that idea, you can now.

(Also, you will be given this cookie if you post an idea.)

Add a caption competition. They are always fun. Bit like pic of the day but have it running each week. Someone posts a picture and the rest of us get to submit a caption.

Some content/game information on the main-page. That might liven up the main page (and the actual site).

Also don't go overboard on cutting the forums down. As it stands there a bit to much sub-forums. But you don't want to lob everything on the same pile.

Contests, Contests, Contests and more Contests.

People love free stuff and will flock here to get it.

Offer a game for free and have eligibility be 5 total posts or more or something.

result: people joining, spamming to get 5 posts, winning the contest and leaving or just the latter.

I posted this on May 17:

Quote

At the time of this writing, the L4D forum has not seen any activity since April 26. On the first page of the TF2 forum, the bottom thread was last used in September. At several other forums, the bottom threads are from 2008 or even earlier.

And so on.

The forum would be cleaner and more simple with fewer forums. So how about something like:

- News
- Site Discussion (or Site & Community)
- Valve Games
- Other Games (existing subforums are not necessary)
- Hardware & Software
- Cafe 17 (I think we can also drop the spam forum, it's not exactly popular)
- Creative Design

I think community gaming could easily be handled with just a couple of sticky threads, with occasional non-sticky threads as necessary.

Even if the board software doesn't support thread tags, people can still use (and be mandated to use, depending on the forum) tags in the thread title, like [HL2] or [L4D].

I think it's need MOAR Half-Life...

I remember joining this forum back in the old days because I felt this forum was the most "half-lifed" one out there, the site almost felt like it was handcrafted with Gordon's crowbar. But of course that was around the 2003/2004 era where Half-Life 2 happened to be the talk of the day, nowadays there's just a lot less HL related stuff to talk about, merely because it's very quiet at Valve's when it comes to EP3 or any other HL goodness.

Also this Valve E3 cancellation deal is a great example of how much more the forums seem to come to life all of a sudden, I can still see the reason what made 99% of us join HLF. Which is, you might have guessed it... 'Half-Life'.
:whack:

But getting moar 'HL' to the forums is of course easier said than done...

(BTW, anyone ever noticed I use a lot of 'tripple-dots' in a lot of my posts...?)

I like how people talk about any kind of Valve related activity bringing a sudden flood of new members to the forums.

This is a Half-Life site, Half-Life is a PC game, Half-Life is not popular anymore, PC gaming is significantly less popular now. Was Half-Life loved by many people in 2004? Of course, that year was the golden age of PC gaming. However, consoles are mainstream now, a lot of PC gamers just moved on to them and left PC gaming behind, along with Half-Life, which at this point may as well be considered a forgotten franchise due to the tremendous failure the episodic games were.

The only way this forum will get a large influx of new members is if Half-Life becomes popular again, which won't happen until Half-Life 3, and even that will be decided on how much Valve advertises the game.

Stop trying to think of pointless contests or other things to bring new members in, you won't change anything other than making the site look more empty than it already is. You're just wasting your money on something that will bring a couple dozen members who will post a few times and never again.

We need to bribe/threaten/harrass Gabe into giving us something exclusive that larger gaming sites will link to.
