Valve has launched their new site for Defense of the Ancients II and are kicking off the launch with a Q&A from fans. The welcoming post of the blog briefly details the upcoming game to those unfamiliar with the original DotA mod. For a more in-depth look at DotA II visit GameInformer for their take on the latest upcoming game from Valve.

But first some of you might be thinking, “What is Dota 2?” Dota began as a user-made modification for Warcraft 3 and has grown into one of the most played online games in the world. Following in the tradition of Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Portal, and Alien Swarm, Dota 2 is the result of Valve hiring the community developers who built the mod and giving them the chance to finally build a full product out of their idea with the help of a professional team of developers and artists at Valve.

I'm intrigued that Valve has never actually said the words "defence of the ancients" It's always DOTA this, DotA that.

I don't know if it's some kind of legal issue of if Icefrog is so used to calling it dota he doesn't even notice anymore.
So much drama around a game I care so little about...

Nah they've got Defense of the Ancients 2 trademarked....might just be a marketing attempt to push it as acronyms - World of Warcraft is known as WoW more than not, so it might be just a long term plan to push DotA as an alternative, but similar brand to WoW in a subtle fashion.

Well yeah, it's the same difference. If Coca Cola brought out Coca Cola 2, then Coca Cola 2 would still be trademarked under the trademark already held for Coca Cola. Thus someone other than Coca Cola can't bring out a Coca Cola 2. The numbers a non-issue!

I remember there were rumors of a possible fight between Valve and Blizzard over Defense of the Ancients name...

In October 2009, IceFrog was hired by Valve Corporation, leading a team in a project that he has described as "great news for DotA fans".[41] Valve filed the trademark for "DotA" in August 2010,[42] leading to Steve Mescon's DotA-Allstars company to file a counter application of trademark for the phrase "Defense of the Ancients", in order to gain ownership of the Warcraft III map and to prevent Valve from entitling a sequel.[43] Valve officially announced Dota 2 in October 2010.
