Howdy, chaps, it is I, the most oniontastic member of HLFallout!

While my underlings and co-dictators work on making the forums as pretty as they used to be in the good old days, when we were young and foolish, we hit a small snag.

Would you, the people, prefer the new forum layout to be fixed width, like it used to be, in ye olden days, or do you prefer it as it is now, dynamically changing depending on your screen or window size?

Please note that this will be a purely cosmetic upgrade, and operating on Valve time, it will be completed some time this century. and NO, we CAN NOT fix the latest post displaying the wrong member name, it is broken in parts of the software we have no access to.

Here's some nostalgia for y'all:

variable/dynamic width

the less restrictions, the better
often posting pictures (among things) in a fixed width is bothersome
<Brumisator> dr matta is starting to act more and mor like the retarded part of gui's brain when he posts

Well pictures would be auto-resized, just as they are now. We're not going back to the old outdated software, just making a new skin for the new one.

One size please! Having to read from side to side on my 24 inch screen is one of the things I disliked from the beginning about the new forums. Also not knowing how wide I should make screenshots I want to post is another thing. :P

EDIT: I hate you all. *referring to current poll results* ;p

I have a 24" monitor too Monkeh; you should sit behind the monitor, not in it.

I have a 27" but I don't have web pages maximised so it doesn't bother me been dynamic width.

I'm with Monkeh to be honest. I just don't like reading extremely long lines of text.

That said I choose change it on the fly, if that means it's something you can set as an option.

Also: to sell ducks, perchance to dream.

There will likely be 2 skins available, pretty much the same, one will be variable width, the other will be for 1600 pixel width monitors, thats the standard, isnt it?

I would like it variable (Dynamic) simply because I still use a 4:3 ratio monitor, and will not be buying a new one until it breaks. It sucks being poor.

What are the pros/cons of the first two?

fixed width:

  • PRO: no more reading across the monitor
  • CON: large monitors means small text area, lots of wasted space
variable width:

  • PRO: you can fit the whole post with pictures, less scrolling down
  • CON: you will have to read across the whole monitor (moving your head)

It really depends on people's monitor sizes, if you have a large monitor you would likely want a fixed width, if you have a small monitor, variable width.
