This is just an awesome tidbit, the workers at the Foxxconn plant are being forced to sign a "No Suicide" Pledge after more than a dozen people committed suicide within a 16 month span. Apart from ignoring all the safety regulations that would prevent the situations that someone would commit suicide (excessive overtime, no rest within 13 days at the peak production of iPads and public humiliation for poor performance) the pledge requires their families to only "seek the legal minimum in damages".

Quote

Foxconn admits that it breaks overtime laws, but claims all the overtime is voluntary.

Some officials within the company even accused workers of committing suicide to secure large compensation payments for their families.

Anti-suicide nets were put up around the dormitory buildings on the advice of psychologists.

At first I thought it was a joke. Then it started to seem real. Then I realized that it was a joke again.

Man that clown is extremely scary.

It's appealing that no action is being taken against the company.

I love most of the stuff of Apple, but i do really dislike the fast pace of their technology development and production is crapped out. It’s really horrible these things happens but i hope people don’t think that Foxxcon is the company that does this.

Yeah, i made a really bad joke. Better thought to edit it :)

I think the BBC made a series that follows young people living the good lifes. They are placed in company's that work (just like Foxxcon) for the western world.

This should go for anything made in China. As long as China keeps manipulating their money to make it ultra cheap, their people's wages will be ultra low

I am extremely appalled by this. The thing is, I do not think that Apple is the only American/Western company taking advantage of Chinese workers like this, but it is probably one of the most severe cases because of the supply and demand of iPhones and iPads.

Imagine how I feel when I see little, 10-year-old, spoiled brats running around with their iPhone 4s barely knowing how to use them, and not really caring or knowing how they were produced.

Certainly not, pretty much anything "made in china" is likely to be a product made using slave labor, but its unlikely to change because people dont want to spend the correct cost to pay the workers a 'living wage'. Until people in china demand better pay then the situation is likely to repeat itself.

Another note: some guy over at slashdot calculated that suicide rates for college campus were twice the suicide rates at the plant.

Yes, that, and most people just see Chinese people as slaves or robots because their population size seems almost infinite to some.

... and then there are those who just don't give a crap. Sadly...
