Origin is EA's Steam. It's their answer to Valve's popular service. This new digital distribution platform starts today.

For now we know that Origin will focus on PC games, but it could later move to mobile devices and others. It will replace the EA Store for PC games distribution.

There will be 150 titles at launch for PC. Social networking features are also promised, so expect profile pages, friends lists and messaging. And to start out with a bang and make its mark on the digital distribution map, EA will make Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO an Origin exclusive. This will mean that highly anticipated titles are surely going to be on ORIGIN, and we need to use multiple other platforms we don't give a shit about. Nicely played, sirs.

You can view the store here.

It's exactly the same as the ea downloader at the moment. The thing that annoys me is I think you can only download games a certain amount of times. I would rather stick to steam because I want everything in one place and steam does it really well. They don't seem to have anything new to bring to the table.

God damn it. **** that. I want them all in one place for convenience. I'm sticking with Steam. I hope they don't have a bunch of exclusives for Origin, although they probably will. I guess EA is trying to take back their position as most hated publisher from Activision...

I'm interested to see what comes out of this. And how it effects the digital distribution market.

I'll just buy retail then, like I did with BC2 (took too long for Steam to get pre-orders going).

Yeah, but what if you need to activate it on ORIGIN? (like STEAMWORKS)

"Hey i want to play Battlefield 3" *boots ORIGIN*
"Hey i want to play Portal 2" *goes to STEAM*
*Ubisoft turns U-PLAY into another shitty platform*
*Activision: "welp, can't fall behind with this shit"*
*Every game gets a "premium pass" for online play*
*Need to pay money to pay for DLC (already happening)*
*Every shit company gets funded by the government, more insanely bloated budgets for shitty mainstream titles*
The end is nigh etc

Why is this so bad? You just start another program if you play want to play a game. Play it and close it if it bothers you.

It's still less time consuming than looking for CDs and takes away from Steam having a monopoly on digital distribution.

What is wrong with this? It discourages second hand sales which give the developers who worked on the game no money whatsoever.

If there were smart they would invest in and take control of the development of Steam for consoles.

I doubt Valve would give that far out of hand.
Also what's wrong with starting you're own digital distribution platform.

It's wrong because everyone that's tried that's not valve ends up doing it wrong

That's no reason to stop doing it.
Basically you're saying no one should even bother. I like Valve but competition should be a drive for the market.
