Braaaaaaaaiins!

So some people upgrade their rigs to run BF3, or Batman: Anisotriopic filtering (sequel to Batman: Anti-Aliasing, get it?). well now that you've pretended to laugh at my joke, I'll just say that my PC is dying. Furious totaly system crashes, now multiple times a day. I've tried all I can think of (mostly swearing it a it and kicking it), but meh, I gotz a little cash from selling my onion juices to that guy in the back alley, so I figured I may as well build a 2011 worthy rig.

Things that I need: everything that's inside the case, things I don't need is peripherals (mouse, kb, speakers, screens), and I'm keeping my sound card, because it's sexy.

So, here's my preemptive list, tell me what you think of it:
revision 4. I changed my mind and I'm reselling my old compy as is, instead of part per part.
  • Core i5 2500k 3,3 GHZ, LGA1155, 8MB

  • Posted Image
NINJA cooler. (just so I can have corsairs and ninjas fighting it out inside my PC.)

  • ASUS GTX 560 Ti , 1GB GDDR5 + Batman - Arkham City
(hey, free game, I was going to buy it some day anyway)

  • SSD: Crucial CT256 M4 SSD2 (speed benchmark winning SSD, 256GB)

  • HDD: 3TB Caviar Green, 3.5", 64MB, Sata3

  • RAM: 2x4GB, DDR3 20000MHz, CL9, Corsair

  • Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro (revision 3.1)

  • LG DVD+RW

  • PSU: Toughpower XT 775W Cable Management
    (:wub cable management)

  • Case: Fractal Designs Define R3 , black
(I really like my current Antec P180 case, and this one looks quite similar, wihtout the brandname overprice)

I'm keeping my external 1TB, should be enough, for now.

Hmmm...a sexy new screen seems tempting. I can't decide between:

1) The better looking VA panel on the iiyama X2472HD-1 with 8ms response time (who the fuck comes up with these names?)

2) The slightly less good looking TN panel of the iiyama E2472HD-1 with 2ms response time

Welp, I'm at 1300 euros, mostly because of my outrageous SSD, I think it's looking pretty good.
With a monitor, it'd come up to an even 1500€. A budget? what is that?

You should get a Tri-set (tri-channel) of RAM memory (3 sticks of 2gb for ex.)

Quote

Tri-channel memory overcomes the bandwidth limitations of individual memory modules by combining the bandwidth of three sticks at a time.

I totally agree. I just upgraded my gaming rig to 12 gb because I got a 6 gb Kingston triple DR for $50.00. You couldn't do better at a garage sale.

Also the i7 does matter Brumi. QPI FTW.

SLI if possible.

SLI? In this day and age? Come on now, be serious.

Thanks for that benchmark site, Anthrax. LGA1366 was a pretty silly idea, I hadn't been keeping up with the hardware wars for a few years.

I was considering the i7 2600k.
But then I noticed the i5 2500k, despite being 33% cheaper, is faster at everything game related. Well, that's that settled.
QPI may look fancy dandy, but I play videogames.

AS far as GPUs are concerned, I'm pretty sure I'm going nvidia this generation, just because I like to change each time I rebuild my machine. GTX 560 (Ti or not Ti) seems to be the way to go. 570, 580, 590 are outrageously priced for little reason.

ASUS P8P67 Pro looks good. (3.1 revision). so many versions of the P8P67, but I kinda need eSATA, so pro it is.

As for RAM, I found some cool 2000MHz CL9, 3 bars of 2GB from Kingston
But some research showed me that the slightly cheaper 1666MHz CL7 (also 3x2GB) From Corsair would actually increase my e-penis a bit more, because bitches love CAS latency.

Don't forget the most important part (and not the least expensive) the power supply !!

I self have a PSU from Cooler Master, and it performs great I think. Never gets hot and it's got all kind's off certificates I don't care about really.

But there are lots of brands, just read some online reviews and pick the one you like, I think 1000watt will be a good choice. Nvidia cards require a lot of power !!

Aye, I already have a good PSU, that's why I'm not getting a new one. I think I'll sell my old PC piece by piece.
Thermaltake toughpower 700MW modular.

Thanks, though.

Looking good so far Brumi. /me is jealous! I need a new rig so badly. But have more important issues to worry about at the moment.

Maybe next year. If so, I will create a post here too. Sometimes I think just to get a high end laptop as Im getting too lazy to build!

Let us know how you go.

Cheers.

Have you given up on your chromebook dreams, Trooper?
Getting a good laptop is probably not a bad idea, the problem is that you have to choose between battery life and performance.

The weirdinset thing is happening right now, my computer started crashing a whole lot, multiple times a day, hence why I started this thread.
And now that I've done some research on good stuff to get, it's perfectly stable, no matter what I do, it's the weirdest thing.
It's like... my computer...can read what I type on my keyboard.

Yeah I think so Brumi. Especially if I decide to go with a new laptop vs. a desktop.

If I go that route I will most likely post a thread, as I seriously do not know anything about higher end gaming laptops.

Hope you get your problems sorted Brumi, or even better, a new pc.

The i5 2500K is awesome, and OCs like a mother fucker. That aftermarket cooler should help tons.

1666Mhz RAM is fine. You wont notice much practical performance increase from high speed RAM. 8GB is a sweet spot, and cheap. Anything more is useless for gaming, though highly relevant for video/image editing.

GTX 570 is amazing. GTX 560 Ti I hear is also amazing. Check out some benchies.

I would stick with a desktop, but It seems my opinion is of low value around here. And to think I've been a computer expert for 20 years. I guess all these years of building high-end workstations and gaming rigs was for naught..... :8

Gaming laptops are a joke, overpriced bricks that receive anemic driver support.

Don't bother with multiple video cards, it doesn't scale well enough for the money.

2500k is a beast, Child Eater is correct.

Damnit, why is the 2500k a 1155 socket, and not a 1156 what I have.

Is there lot of difference between the 2500k and the i5 750 ?
