Am I the only one who thinks the Call of Duty and Gears of War series are boring and overhyped?

I simply don't understand why people are so impressed by those games. Sure, the graphics are decent, but the storylines and gameplay are meh.

What do you guys think?

HAH! You haven't been on HLF much, have you?

Many of us despise CoD and GoW 'round here. Many people who dare call themselves "gamers" and who've lived through PC gaming in the 1990s are here to testify.

My thoughts in a nutshell: CoD and all its clones are not games, they're semi-interactive bad cutscenes. And it's a sad state of affairs that they're the current benchmark for FPS games.
Slow shitty consoletoy controllers are to blame for the boring gunplay.

On a related note, see the video I posted in the video thread just earlier today.

Also, shameless self.promotion, pertaining to Battlefield 3's single player.

Call of Duty & GoW are fun, but they're something inbetween games and movies.
Yes they are overhyped, but you can still have some fun with them. If they weren't redicuously priced....
(Have never played MW2, Black Ops ir GoW3)

No, I haven't... I've been gone a long time as you have just noticed. :) I pop up here every once in a while. Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way.

My friends just love those franchises, and I personally think they suck. I've noticed how in films and television series they always show people playing those games (and Counter Strike) instead of franchises like TES, Fallout, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted etc.

How is it even humanly possible for Gamespot and IGN to consistently give them 9+ scores? Battlefield 3's singleplayer is criticized by IGN and GameSpot, but it's exactly like CoD singleplayer! It's always about WMD, Russians and Arabs.

I can't believe that a game like Arkham City gets the same score as Gears of War 3... Arkham City has much more depth.

You shouldn't trust game journalists for reviews, ever. For many reasons. here are a few obvious ones:

  • Major publications are all bribed by the publishers, whtehter it be "goodie bags", threats to stop advertising, or straight up money.
  • They foster to the audience. People like what's popular (by definition)? Okay let's praize what is popular.
  • Most game publications based in the USA (so, basically all high profile gaming sites) are nowadays owned by IGN, who, in my opinion, are complete fuckwits with no brains or writing talent, to put it gently.

I don't know anyone in real life who plays videogames, so HLF is my refuge. A refuge full of self-righteous assholes, and I am one of them.

Every once in a blue moon when I'm bored at work and have read everything on HLF and Yahoo news and RPS, I'll go to IGN to see if there is anything interesting. I am constantly shocked at how poor the writing is. The writing on many posts here at HLF by non-professional writers are often much more eloquently stated than anything on IGN.

I recently read IGN's review of Uncharted 3 and it somehow managed to be more poorly written than the one they did of Dead Space 2.

Does this mean Half-Life is another generic shooter because it's another aliens vs. humans scenario?

You're not the only 1.

On the bus in to work today and yesterday this kid who couldn't have been older than 12 with his mates just would not stop going on about how he was looking forward to MW3 and his favourite characters from CoD/MW and crap like that. I wanted to punch him in the face so badly for

1. liking to a disturbing degree such a crap series of games that he's not even old enough to play
2. not shutting up about how he likes it
3. not even knowing what he was on about (apparently the M14 is in CoD:WaW, not the M1 Carbine)
4. having the most annoying voice in the world

If he's still going on about it tomorrow I might just have to throw him from the bus while it's moving.

I agree with your last statement :)

My friends are not real "gamers" -- they don't play very often, and when they do play they play games like CoD, GoW, FIFA Football 2012 or Madden NFL.

FIFA football is a good game, but some of the people who play it are... well... CoD-like people.

Strangely, I don't know anyone who games as much as me. I have a friend who loves the BioShock series, but he is not that into gaming in general.

You could at least have come up with some manly fairytale about how CoD games make your PTSD go haywire, from those 7 times you were deployed in the gulf.

Arkham City and Gears of War have completely separate types of gameplay. They are being rated according to the type of game they are.

Well, there are only a certain number of basic plots in all media, and any story is really just a variation on these plots.

HL1 and HL2 may not have had the most intriguing plots, but they redefined gaming in certain (small) ways. I think this site is a testament to that fact (and I assume you agree with me since you are a member of this forum).

I realise that they rate games differently based on the genre, and so on and so forth, but rating a generic franchise a consistent 9+ is still absurd. They have not done anything unique, and yet they are still rewarded for creating dumbed down standards in gaming. The same is true for CoD.

PS: I'm going to read the IGN review of Uncharted 3 just so I can laugh at it :P

Yea, I would totally agree... casual gamers that try to be hardcore gamers piss me off. Especially younger kids... and all of those craptastic reviews piss me off too... I'm tired of crap "popular" games getting good reviews! :pissed:

I have an idea... why don't we start getting some of our own reviews posted on this website? I'm sure there are other people out in the world that are as sick of reading junk articles as we are. I know lots of you post things in the forum, but full reviews would be much more visible if they had their own page.
