When I mailed them saying I'd eat my hat if they didn't announce EP3 they told me to go ahead and eat it.

That's why you should've said it the other way around (like Crusty); I'll eat my hat IF you release a screenshot or artwork.

I don't see how arguing, that they should as an obligation release info about it's existence is up to the consumer. They will release info if they think the game is going to be finished within a couple of months.
Sure Valve will eventually wrap up the Half-Life series, however I can not see that they will abandon their fans by not making an end to the series.
Sure they do some of their fans no favor. I can understand that the enthusiasm for the series bleeds dry just by prolonging the time between Episode Two and it's follower up.
But in the end it is a company that needs to make money, pays its employees and be profitable or to stay financial healthy over time.
If it fits their 'planning' and it doesn't hurt their financial position than why the need to rush?

it may take them 2 more years, maybe 10 more years, but Valve will release ep3/hl3. Patience is a virtue that has already been rewarded many times over in the past.
Now, if you will excuse me, im off to lock myself in a fridge, make sure someone frees me when ep3 comes...

HOWEVER, we can all agree that our site died because of no news. =(

This isn't good enough, 10 years to finish the series? Half the staff at valve could die by then, hell we could all die. They should just let the community know what is happening. If they are trying to relive the excitement that we had prior to Half-life 2's release then they cannot recreate this. They just need to get on and see what new ends up with their successor. It won't be the same but it will be new and thats what has to happen.
