Anon is DDoS'ing several sites, including the FBI, MPIAA and RIAA, other sites are going down as well, passwords and other data is also being spread about.

Charges include money laundering, total sentence time can be as high as 50 years.

worse is, it will be used to support more draconian rules, ultimately, the US, like many other countries, will require ISPs to block morally insidious or copyright infringing sites and demand they keep a log of all my horse porn activities to use against me in a court of law...

I think the charges are willful distribution of copyright protected materials (and profiting from it) and money laundering.

Considering it's a global operation I guess they have more proof than just complaints from the entertainment industry.

Well, the chaps behind Megaupload made a lot of money from subscription fees and such so even if most is legit stuff it's wrong to profit from sharing copyrighted material. Still, with SOPA/PIPA, this and also the fact that one of the biggest ISPs in Finland had to block The Pirate Bay makes me rather worried about the future of the internet and freedom of speech.

Because stopping illegal file-sharing is the same as preventing freedom of speech.

I think the most important aspect is that corporations (music & video industries) are using the government as their own private police force to take down sites. While its true that these sites profited by providing access to copyrighted materials, its the collusion of forces bent on protecting their own profit margins rather than freedom of speech that has gotten people angry.

Let's not forget that Megaupload had tons of legit files as well. Is it their fault what their users had upload there?

Reading up it does seem a bit of a strange case.

I guess the case is that they upheld a false face of copyright protection, while internally they wanted that material and payed the people who uploaded copyrighted content. If that's true, it does become a bit different than just allowing a venue for people to upload to.
But I wonder how hard they can make that case?

I hated that site anyway, half the time the links didn't work or was full of ads to trick you into thinking it was the download button. And having to wait 30 seconds, 30 seconds of my very valuable time.
