But wait, Megaupload's not even a US-based site. It's based in Hong Kong. So how come the US can take it down?

According to the articles there are servers in the US and the Netherlands. The entire thing was a cooperation between authorities in several countries.
Which is why I hope this is based on good evidence.

I believe the argument was that if you conduct business in the US and with US dollars, you are subject to US commerce laws. MegaUpload was paying US customers to uploaded popular movies, which they knew users would register to obtain.
The other one was mentioned by Poison_Berrie, they used servers in the US.
Finally, they received take down notices for several copyrighted works, rather than delete the files as required by law, they broke the link & waited for someone to upload the same file, so instead of making room for that file, they simply reused the old file and enabled the link.
As funny as making fun of this guy's appearance, he had a networth around 200 million, and was banging playboy bunnies...
