Well it seems there's some analysis made over at The Verge stating that Valve could be working on a "Steam Box"-esque gaming console and will be announcing it sometime this year. Read on for a quote from the article.

UPDATE: Valve denys rumors to be true.

Quote

The most interesting piece of this puzzle may be related to that statement. According to sources, the Steam Box isn't intended to just clash with current gaming consoles. Rather, Valve wants to take Apple and its forthcoming new Apple TV products head-on. Newell has clear questions about Apple's strategy, telling the The Seattle Times "On the platform side, it's sort of ominous that the world seems to be moving away from open platforms," adding that "They build a shiny sparkling thing that attracts users and then they control people's access to those things."

They did say they'd develop the hardware if someone else wasn't doing it. But I'm going to be skeptical and not believe it until there's an official statement.

Also I scroll down to the comments and the first one I see is T.C. Scottek (or Laughing Stoic as we know him).

According to the article what they are developing is very close to a gaming PC, albeit a prepackaged one with inbuilt access to game distribution systems like Steam and some fancy biometric controllers. But at it's core it's a PC and will run games developed for PC.

Isn't this gonna be some cloud machine, that you sit at home with a cheap box and can play games that get rendered on a computer somewhere else, so you don't need a big machine?
