PC Gamer has tried to get an answer on the Valve Box rumors.
It seems that, like I thought, they were a bit premature. Doug Lombardi sort of reiterates what Gabe said in that recent Penny Arcade interview, that they are looking at biometric feedback devices. But on the subject of a console said:

So it looks like they are not at the point where they'd consider shipping the hardware themselves or developing a console.

What's interesting is that the dude who brought this to life on the Verge claimed he had seen more than he could report on.

Kind of wondering if he was just blowing smoke up our asses.
