Though there are quite a few Indie games that were funded with Kickstarter, Doublefine with it's classic adventure game project seems to have put it on the map for developers looking to make something a publisher won't even consider.

So I thought to make a thread in which we bring each others attention on interesting projects, be they Indie companies or larger developers.
And to see if they an deliver.

I for example have funded the Wasteland sequel and have been dubbing whether to help fund The banner saga or just buy it when it comes out.

So have you seen an interesting game on Kickstarter?
Do you think this the opportunity the industry needed, doomed to fail or that it's silly to give your money before a regular pre-order would be considered?

Oh, neat thread idea!

The concept of kickstarter isn't all that new, I've helped fund, amongst others, Natural Selection 2 by prepurchasing it way back when, but kickstarter gives the whole idea more transparency and legitimacy, so it's a great concept that got a lot of good press with the Double Fine incident.

I highly doubt it's "the future of game development" like some crazy indie types say, I just see it as a fad that's at its top height right now, and it will eventually die down as a fad but remain a viable but rather obscure way of funding games.

It's a bit of a fad right now, but I don't know if it'll become an obscure way of funding games.
Indie developers will probably keep using it at least. But there seem to be plenty developers with ideas they can't sell to publishers, who can turn to this to start something themselves.

Well that's only 5 people. On average people pledged $50 per person.
Still I'm surprised at how many people actually donate above $100, but than I'm not the kind of guy who buys, collectors editions and peripheral toys/merchandise.

Going back on earlier statements Obsidian could apparently no longer wait with their own kickstarter until Avellone is done with Wasteland 2.

Project Eternity (working title) aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPGs that we enjoyed making - and playing. At Obsidian, we have the people responsible for many of those classic games and we want to bring those games back.

Throwing my wallet at the screen didn't work so I'll have to wait for the Paypal option.

Fantasy settings seem to be RPG's brown deserts.

Breathing new life into this thread with news of a successor to Planescape: Torment.

Torment: Tide of Numenera isn't a direct sequel, but more a game in the spirit of the original. It's the second game to be kickstarted by inXile and has already been funded and now in serious need of more stretch goals.

It was amazing that it got funded ($900,000) in 7 hours. That was crazy.
