The guys at Phoronix have let it be known that Valve are working on releasing Steam on Linux. Phoronix have apparently spoken directly to Gabe Newell, who was quite keen on the open-source platform. They report: “His level of Linux interest and commitment was incredible while his negativity for Windows 8 and the future of Microsoft was stunning.”

im glad that they have become platform independent, it almost seems like Gabe is really pushing towards a steam console based on linux and this will get them there.

This is great/terrible news! I do most of my development in Linux which means I can easily play games with friends without having to reboot. This means better chance of being not productive though D:

Thanks C17 interesting article albeit badly written. Unless my memory is failing me i think Valve has mentioned plans for Linux support years ago.

Personally (and I'm not proud of this) I've never had linux as my OS. Yes Windows is expensive but as a PC gamer I don't really have a choice as no other OS is widely supported by devs. There's no doubt that widespread support from game devs would make Linux a viable option for millions of home users who avoid it atm. Also many of us PC gamers are opinion leaders within our community when it comes to anything PC related, so if we did start using linux we woudld undoubtedly influence some others.

As a fan I find this to be good news, although I'm still a bit unclear on what Valve's objectives are here... Do they think Microsoft is too into xbox and hence neglecting PC gaming, do they want to influence other devs to support Linux, is it simply that the rumored 'Steam Box' is going to be Linux based making these ports essential. Or they are trying to get into a space where Origin doesn't compete.

It will be interesting to see if Gabe is right about Windows 8, he was right about Vista after all.

Good to see them branch out to Linux. Seeing that they've stated that they are for open platforms for some time this would be a logic step.
