Via The Verge comes one of Gabe Newell CEO of Valve Software's latest interview with All Things D. He talks about a lot of interesting topics ranging from his Nostradamus-esque perspective of Windows 8 which should be with us shortly to touch based interactive systems and Valve's very own foray into wearable computing. Quotes from the interview after the jump.

Quote

On wearable computers

“I can go into the room and put on the $70,000 system we’ve built, and I look around the room with the software they’ve written, and they can overlay information on objects regardless of what my head or eyes are doing. Your eyes are troublesome buggers.”

On the evolution of touch

“We think touch is short-term. The mouse and keyboard were stable for 25 years, but I think touch will be stable for 10 years. Post-touch will be stable for a really long time, longer than 25 years.

“Post touch, depending on how sci-fi you want to get, is a couple of different technologies combined together. The two problems are input and output. I haven’t had to do any presentations on this because I’m not a public company, so I don’t have any pretty slides.

I'm surprised by Gabe's reaction towards Windows 8 though. I wonder if it really will be a flop ala vista was. Oh and City thanks for the pic edit the post looks much better now.

I think Gabe is spot on... Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 + Metro.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time working out how people are going to react to windows 8, changes a lot of stuff and the metro interface just seems a bad idea for desktop computers... People hate launch pad on mac because it takes the iOS stuff and puts it on desktop metro though is basicly the metro phone interface thrown onto a desktop when it really is designed for touch... They really don't seem to have done anything to the 'desktop' part of windows...

Seems like Microsoft is trying to consolidate their PC and mobile platforms into one. I think they will find, in time, that their decision is lolking retarded.

Thankfully the Gaben (who has apparently lost several hundred pounds in the last year) is here to save us.

Gabe is just pissed that the app store and GFWL is built in so deeply to Windows 8, that if it actually turns out decent he won't be getting his 30% cut from sales.

I'll format a drive for Linux if Valve can get support behind it.

7 is okay, but I mainly only use it for the DX11 features.

I don't see anything appealing about 8.

Gabe was right about vista when he criticised it before it launched so it will be interesting to see if his windows 8 predictions pan out as well... I don't like what i read about windows 8 but haven't personally tried the beta so can't make a definitive judgement. On the subject of touch i don't think it will Come close to grabbing the entire market share like KB and mouse did in the past. I'm not saying that KB and mouse will last forever but rather that it's replacement has to be something even more precise and less labour intensive- touch clearly isn't. Which is why it won't capture the market for many demanding programs.
