On Valves Linux blog they have explained after a little work they have managed to get 315 FPS on the Linux version but only 270 FPS on Windows which is about 14 percent slower even though they are testing on identical hardware. After optimizing the Source Engine for the Linux platform, Valve wondered why OpenGL was outperforming Direct3D at a technical level.

Their research found that, on the same hardware, there are "a few additional microseconds of overhead per batch in Direct3D which does not affect OpenGL," indicating that Direct3D may not be as efficient as Microsoft would like developers to believe. For more information read the writeup on the Valve Linux blog.

I was surprised by this, something tells me that source is more cpu dependent and linux doesnt have the windows bloat to reduce its performance.

Since OSX is related to linux you would think it would run better, every time I play a source game on mac it always seems slightly slower than windows.

Yeah the Linux team were answering nearly every question asked! Sure don't do that on their other blogs!
