Now that Valve has nearly perfected Steam, their automatic content delivery system, the next logical step forward is Episodic Content. What is Episodic Content? In short this is just a new way of delivering games and expansion packs to the community. Instead of taking a few years to develop, create, and test a full length game, a team can release content in short bursts containing of a few hours of game play. This is the direction Valve is taking with the announced episode based expansions to Half-Life 2.
In a recent interview conducted by Game Informer, Doug Lombardi confirms Valve’s reasons for episodic content development:
Some of the reason why we are going episodic is our experience in multiplayer. Counter-Strike has arguably been episodically developed over the years. There was never a point where we said, “Oh this is it!” and then four years later you’ll get something else. Every couple months you’re getting stuff. After six years of building Half-Life 2 and watching Counter-Strike parallel from the other side of our office, you know, the light bulb starts going off at some point.
With the links between developers and their community growing ever stronger, a move like this is not unfathomable. Having new content distributed roughly every four months, Valve can lock in on what fans enjoy as well as keep them wanting more.
