While an MIT trained theoretical physicist by profession, Gordon is no stranger to action. His resourcefullness and trigger-finger kept him alive through the Black Mesa catastrophe but can he deal with the new alien menace in City 17?

Shady boss character
The blue-suited "Government Man" was always just out of Gordon's reach in Black Mesa until finally forcing Gordon to work for him. You're still in his employ in HL 2 - more info from our story page. Oh and you can trust him as far he can throw you.

Scientist and source of information
Another of the survivors from the Black Mesa catastrophe and one of Gordon's former colleagues, Eli is one of the resistance's foremost leaders. He heads up the lab outside of City 17 at Black Mesa East.

Side-kick
The daughter of Eli Vance, Alyx plays an important role in Gordon's latest task. She'll be assisting him to overcome the Combine forces. It is known that her mother died in the Black Mesa devastation but the rest of her history has not yet been revealed.

Harebrained scientist
As was pointed out in the original Half-Life game manual, Dr. Kleiner was Gordon's lecturer at MIT and helped him get his job at Black Mesa. Evidently he too survived the previous mess and is now caught up with current events in City 17. It is not yet known if any of the other scientists from Black Mesa escaped as well.

Security guard turned combat soldier
Black Mesa's venerable security guard is back once again to aid Gordon in thwarting the evils that be. Known for his amusing one-liners from his first outing and his starring appearance in the "Blue Shift" expansion pack, Barney's return is a welcome one.

Evil faction leader
While very little is known about Dr. Breen (also known as "The Administrator" from Black Mesa), it seems he will lead an opposing human faction encourging submission to the alien combine. His face and voice project propaganda messages across City 17. Exactly what this entails is shrouded in mystery.

Booby-trapper extraordinaire
Father Grigori is the last remaining human inhabitant of the zombie-infested Ravenholm town outside City 17. You'll need the slightly crazy monk's help to live through the horrors of Ravenholm.

Assistant to Eli Vance
Dr. Mossman also worked as a scientist with Gordon back at Black Mesa. In Half-Life 2, she assists Eli Vance is his underground lab at Black Mesa East. But has she other motives?

Alyx's robotic pet/sidekick
Alyx's robotic sidekick known only as "Dog" was built over a number of years by Eli Vance to protect Alyx in the increasingly hostile post-Black Mesa world. Dog's hydraulics give it strength to break through areas Gordon can't.

Allies to resistance
Known commonly as "alien slaves" from the original game, this time vortigaunts are fighting on Gordon's side. The vortigaunts help a number of times throughout the game, providing you with power-ups, new weapons and yoda-style one-liners.

Rebel outpost leader
Colonel Cubbage leads a group of resistance fighters on the coast. His outpost is continually under fire from Combine patrols and gunships. Best of all, he'll introduce you to his good friend, the rocket launcher.

Allied fighters
The rebels of the City 17 resistance will give you valuable help, fighting beside you against the Combine. Packing an assortment of weapons, fight best in squads. Be on the look out for medics (marked with a red cross on their uniforms) if you're low on health.

City 17's oppressed civilians
Held in the iron-grip of Combine oppression, City 17's citizens have their hands full just trying to stay alive. Although afraid of Combine reprisals, these civilians are eager to help Gordon on his way and aid the resistance.
