Spoiler Alert: This page contains details of Half-Life 2's plot as we know it.

A Direct Sequel
In an interview with Planethalflife, Marc Laidlaw (Valve's script writer) had this to say,
There is no question that this is a direct sequel, and that what takes place in Half-Life 2 is a result of the events in Half-Life. The characters are more developed versions of the caricatures in Half-Life; some of the monsters are evolved versions of creatures that first came to Earth in the first game; continuity has helped us set the stage and given a key into the new world.
The official site briefly describes the world Gordon finds himself in,
The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

Wake Up and Smell the Ashes
While Valve has kept tight lipped about the plot's details, we do have a good idea of the general setting and storyline. The game's events take place 10 years after the Black Mesa incident. The scene opens with the G-Man explaining the situation to Gordon in his typically cryptic fashion.
This is the transcript from the E3 2004 presentation,
Rise and shine, Mr Freeman…rise and shine. Not that I wish to imply that you have been sleeping on the job…no one is more deserving of a rest. And all the effort in the world would have gone to waste but until…well let's just say your hour has come again. So wake up Mr Freeman, wake up and smell the ashes.
The next thing Gordon knows, he's on a train coming to a stop in "City 17". Valve has confirmed that the game will take place in this run-down Eastern-European city and the surrounding area. Unfortunately for our sleeping hero, the human race has since become enslaved by an alien force known as the "Combine". They exercise an oppressive regime, keeping the citizens of City 17 closely guarded with troops, gunships and towering tripod machines.

I'm Being Oppressed!
Naturally, humans are putting up a fight and at the forefront of this effort are Dr. Eli Vance and his daughter Alyx. With the help of other surviving Black Mesa scientists and City 17's underground troops, Gordon quickly joins the resistance. Apparently, the alien "vortigaunts" from the original game now fight alongside you.

But not everyone is as willing to stand up to the Combine. Dr. Breen heads a faction who believe that submission is the best choice for the human race. His pro-Combine propaganda blares over the streets of City 17 through loudspeakers, TVs and mounted video screens. Even as you step off the train into the city, he reassures "it's safer here". Sure it is.

The Combine's monstrous headquaters towers into air - so massive it's visible from almost anywhere in the city.
The Citadel
Perhaps most intruiging of all is the towering Combine Citadel which looms ominously over City 17. It clearly serves as the Combine's headquaters but its role seems much more significant. In the E3 2003 presentation, Gabe Newell pointed out that this fortress gradually expands into the city, "eating" up any buildings in its path.

It seems that infiltrating and destroying this monolith will be Gordon's ultimate objective. Check out our story speculation article for a more in-depth analysis of the Half-Life/HL2 storyline as we know it.
